Question: In the 1.8 litre Petrol i30 (GD model), when ever I accelerate over 5,500 RPM, the engine makes a "whirring" sound, and sounds like what resembles a turbo engine (but the engine is not), so would anyone have an idea of what causes the sound ? Driving normally (under high RPM), the whir isn't there.

Air Conditioning running? could be the compressor?

At 5.5k rpm, things are starting to get a bit busy, so it could be anything, alternator is geared down by pulley circumference relative to the crankshaft pulley, so that's probably 10k rpm, water pump, similar, etc. Air vacuum in the inlet would be noisy. So take your pick.

I would agree! Same with the kit we run at work, chasing phantom sounds at high rpm, could be sooo many things. Best not to worry really, you could always remove your beasts and spin the idlers/tensioners to see if that's crook which is fairly common....
