Just saw the topic about alarm and read Hemmi's question about insurance.

So.. I've heard some countries have really good insurance companies. I say that, because I've heard that when friends cosines car was stolen (I think it was an Audi A6 and I'm not sure whether he's from Switzerland or Norway - I know he's from Europe), he had comprehensive insurance. He's car was 2 years old, new car coasted him approx 50.000-60.000 EUR. After his car was stolen, he went to the police and did all the paper work, went to his insurance company, did the same there and in few weeks he got the money on his account - but he got the whole amount (those 50-60.000 EUR) ?!?!

Well..I don't know how it is in your countries but here we have it like this:

For i30, the regular insurance (but really basic insurance) costs (with no bonuses) approx 510 EUR (around AUS $ 900), but usually everyone gets at least the insurance that costs (for i30) around 610 EUR (approx AUS $ 1,071).

Than you have the comprehensive insurance which covers the damage if somebody breaks in to your car, steals your car, if you hit someones car, if somebody scratches your car, etc.... That kind of Basic compr.insurance costs around 800 EUR (AUS% 1,400). You can also get the full insurance, which I've got and which includes towing, free car while your car is being repaired, money if somebody steals your car etc. That kind of insurance costs around 1,500-1,600 EUR or approx $AUS 2,600-2800 with no bonuses (I'm still talking about i30 insurance). Oh and I remember my friend had a Golf GTI and his full insurance was around 5,000 EUR if I'm correct AUS $8,800, but with all the bonuses (which lower the price) he paid around 2,500 EUR -> $4,400 (stronger the engine higher the price).

Ok..so far so good. But..in case your car is stolen and you have the full comprehensive insurance, you don't get the value of the new car, but the value of the car that would be worth if you were selling it at that point. So..that means if I've paid for my new car AUS$ 30,000 and after 2 years my car had been stolen, I won't get the $30,000, but 20,000 or so.. After 5 years that means some $12,000 and after 10 years maybe 5,000. All the insurance companies have it the same here..

It is probably the same in most countries, but if not, please write how your insurance looks like..

Hi accim....

Scary stuff

I get full comprehensive insurance on our i30 for about A$400 a year this includes one free windscreen replacement (no excess to pay) and my excess for claims ( the bit I have to pay) is only $250 I think for an accident that is my fault...Our Nissan Tiida which is a similar vehicle is around the same figure ...

From my understanding most companies over her will replace your car with a new one if it gets written off in the first 12 months after that it's either "market value" or you can pay a bit more for an agreed value which would generally give you enough to buy a car of similar age and condition...

Your Insurance costs are astronomical. The wife and I are both over 50 y/o with clean driving records .. but few over 25 y/o would pay more that A$1000 for an i30 over here!

Our comprehensive cover in the UK is similar to that in that you get what the car is worth at the time of the accident/theft rather than the purchase price.  Many dealers now sell an optional (and additional) gap insurance which lasts for the lifetime of the purchase loan (if you buy a car via a loan) where if something happens the gap insurance tops up the main insurance to pay off the outstanding amount on the loan in full.

My Rudd bonus went towards paying for my insurance - which is comprehensive I believe. (I've gone with NRMA at this point because that's who my husband's with and bundling policies is nice!) If the car is written off within the next 2 years I'll get one exactly the same delivered to my door.

Not that I'd want to put that to the test, but it is nice to know Sheldon'd be replaced if he kicks the bucket within the next 22 months!

I don't pay insurance, not directly at least. :-)
The only problem with the Motability cover is that contents are not covered i.e. if a break in results in the loss of personal property. I keep saying I'll upgrade my household policy to cover any eventuallity, may be next week.
