Whenever you set the direction to windscreen it defaults to A/C on for maximum defogging.

It's like buying a dog, and then choosing to bark yourself.
The windscreen clears much quicker when the A/C is on, when it has done its job I switch the airflow to the cabin and sometimes turn A/C off. It has never bothered me.
