Hey guys, I've noticed that redline starts at like 5-6k on the I30, Which is REALLY low revs considering usually it's 6-7 and maybe 8k on some cars.

I was wondering is their any bad damage that could be caused for just hitting the redline, not staying there, just hitting then changing gear ?

I mean I've got a Ford Capri 1992 with 200k+ on the Odo, and I'm sure it's been redlined tons of times in it's life, with no damage and repairs and It's a 1992 engine.

So what Im asking is will the engine get wrecked if I hit the redline when changing gears ?

(I'd like help from an expert) Not someone who just has general knowledge

Thanks guys.

Ash

I wouldn't do it often at all, there is a reason why it is red, seems to be the universal warning colour.

I'm no expert Ash but the diesel redlines at 4,800 and I think the petrol redlines at 6500..

It is normal for a diesel to redline around that RPM and there is no need (or benefit) in revving the i30 diesel past 4000...

Revving it to 4800 once in a while shouldn't hurt but would be detrimental long term if done regularly (I.M.O.)

they would have a rev limiter, it will eather be fuel cut off or ignition cut off stops you over reving, the rev limit of a motor means nothing. i think the 2.0 might be a long stroke, normaly a longer stroke would get its Torque at a few hundred rev lower than a over square short stroke.
rev's mean nothing if you rev a motor out of it's power range you are just waisting time as the stop excellerating as hard. also a longer stoke motor has a higher piston speed than a short stoke motor, so remember that piston goes up at a higher speed then and the end of the stroke it stops and goes back down the bore at the same high speed at high revs.

if you ever go to the Drags and see the Nitro burners they only rev to about 5,000 and some don't even use a gearbox just special clutch, they do standing 1/4 mile (400m? ) in 4.5 seconds and speeds of 330+mph (500+kph? ) that is done with bulk TQ also HP
but you can rev your motor mate just tell me if you get to over rev it in 5th gear and i bet you can't
Cheers

As Dazz said, the redline is just below 5000 on a CRDi, which is high for a diesel, and 6500rpm on a petrol, which is pretty standard these days. As far as I know, that applies to all the international variations of i30s...

There isn't any real damage from revving it right out, as long as the servicing is up to date and the engine is warm. There isn't really a lot of point either though, in my experience the diesel runs out of steam by just over 4000 and the petrol, although it will pull hard to the limiter, goes just as hard changing at 5500-6000.

If revving the guts out of the car is your bag, just make sure the engine is fully warm before you do it and make sure there's good quality (and clean) oil in it. And don't free-rev the engine (i.e. without it being in gear) to the redline, or (if you've got a manual) change gear without backing off the throttle. Flat-changing will cause damage.

2i30s, the rev limiter on the 2.0 petrol should be at 6500-6600rpm. Given it's starting to get a little stressed by then I imagine that if you were getting 7300 out of yours it would be really getting cranky. It's also written in to the ECU software so unless you are running different software it shouldn't be letting you do that.

I would suspect that it might actually only be getting to 6500 but the tacho may be over-reading. There is a software glitch in some of the petrol i30s that causes the tacho to over-read, although the ECU is reading correctly. There is a fix for that. If you're worried about that you can get the dealer to check that the tacho is reading the same as the ECU.

Your cars are fairly new M8.. I wouldn't be taking them to the rev limiter if it was me... :'(
