Twelve life sentences plus 3318 years.
That's quite a long time.
Apparently his defence lawyer said they won't appeal.
I guess even if they got the sentence cut by 50% it would be a big help.

There is never a reason for capital punishment (IMO). Oh no, I've started that debate again.

Why didn't they just say "Life with no minimum". Same result, yet it doesn't make the news.

Don't worry, Tim.  I'm pretty sure Dave's don't take too long.  He'll be back any second now.

I'm all for capital punishment, there's absolutely no reason scum like that should be kept alive let alone costing tax payers money to keep them locked up :disapp:

Even the USA don't execute mentally ill people.   :disapp:

The cost of a capital trial and all of the appeals that go with that are very expensive.  He is not appealing this decision, so no more costly court battles.   :goodjob:

CraigB
Mentally ill is just a nice way of saying psychopathic deranged murdering bastard, no excuses imo.

Keeping him is prison will still cost tax payers on average $150,000 a year so a capital trial would be cheaper in the long run.

Capital punishment seems to be a good way of keeping the crime rate low in the USA.   :crazy1:

From Wikipedia:

In 2014, among facilities operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the average cost of incarceration for federal inmates in fiscal year 2014 was $30,619.85.

That's a long way short of the $150,000 per year you quoted.  Although people on death row do cost an extra $90,000 per year.  Cost of a normal trial (no capital punishment) $740,000.  Cost of a capital trial is $1,260,000.  $520,000 buys a lot of years!!

I think whoever did those calculations is way off, I know for a fact that maximum prisoners kept at one of our local prisons here cost in excess of $120,000 per year, taking into account food - clothing - monitoring - medical and the list goes on, 30k just doesn't do it.

They are US figures, not Australian.  Obviously our figures will be different as we treat our prisoners differently.

CraigB
I cant see how the costs would vary that much even with it being the US

Either way! I still say a bullet is the cheapest option and probably the most satisfying for the people whom lost their family members to freaks like him.

What happens if you are wrong, if the person you just shot was found out to be innocent?  You can't "un-kill" them.  You can't say it wouldn't happen, because it still does!!  Just look up "wrongful executions".  If you say that more rigour would be involved, then the cost of the trial goes up dramatically.

It is not a deterrent either, otherwise the USA wouldn't have crimes where capital punishment was the result.

CraigB
Cases like that one cant be proven otherwise, he's definitely guilty...these are the type of cases/people I'm saying should be killed.

We need to have this debate over a nice bottle of red!!  My shout!!  When will you be in Broome or Tassie?

CraigB
Sounds good :goodjob2: it may be some time before I go either direction though, you could always pop by Perth...I'm sure those flight computers mess up some times and you just ended up in Perth rather than an oil rig off the North West :snigger:

Of course she does.  Even my kids say they had a "Dad look" for something, which they can't find.  A "Mum look" is a proper search.

I hope ASIO aren't reading this thread, Dave, otherwise you might receive a visit.

After the Margaret River red, I recommend a Cambewarra Shiraz, or a Tasmanian Pinot Noir (or both).
