Hi all,

After not being quite satisfied by Hyundai's response of 'if we cant find the fault it doesn't exist' I decided to try and find the source of my front end clunking sound.

After Googling a bit I decided to grab the anti-sway bar while the engine and suspension was still 'hot' and to my surprise shaking it gave me the exact same sound that has been plaguing me for the past year!

I have yet to acquire a set of replacement links but today I noticed that the 17mm nut turns as well as the shaft it is attached to. There is no place to shove a spanner or Allen key on the rear of the drop link, only a black plastic cover.

Has anyone on here removed one yet that wouldn't mind telling me how to remove them to install my new ones?

Thank you/baie dankie

It is normally possible to have a spanner in between to lock the joint so it wont turn. If not, your next step will be to cut the lucknut off with an angle grinder.

Asterix beat me to it. They are similar to the picture shown but only have two opposing flats. 17mm is the size you want.

Aha! So that's where it's hiding.

I shall go have a peek at it a bit later on and see if I can get a grip on the hidden bugger.

I kept on looking behind the entire bushing for a nut or bolt to hold on to but I couldn't figure out how I was going to secure it to get the nut off.

Otherwise as you said Henning I'll give it a whack with the grinder (obviously once I have the replacement parts :p)

Thanks for the assistance everyone :goodjob:

After a very ragged drive back to Port Elizabeth I decided to phone around for drop link prices in town.

My first, favourite spare parts place refused to help me and pointed me to another place who quoted me ZAR1026 for both links - absolute madness. A colleague recommended another place called DAR who gave me a price less likely to induce a stroke and/or heart attack - R627 :goodjob2: They are not OEM parts but  made by Delphi, part no. TC2152 if anyone needs it.

I had the parts ordered and they should be here tomorrow. I'll update with my findings here soon :goodjob2:

Aye, I know only the right hand side one is shot but I would rather replace both and save myself the effort of doing it again in x amount of time. I just hope the issue I am having are the drop links, but reaching into the engine bay and tugging on the ARB does exhibit the same sound I get while driving.

My logic deduced that the chances of it being the drop link are 99%. The other 1% I will leave to chance :whistler:

Bit late now but best way to check link rods or d-rubbers is to get someone to rock the car side to side while you feel the joints.

Hi Tim, that is what we also did but strangely enough there wasn't a knocking sound when we did this. The joint did have some play on, a minute amount, but enough that I suspect it caused the sound I kept on hearing.

At first it only happened when the suspension components were 'warm' but since my return from leave it does it all the time. Hopefully the part replacement sorts it out :sweating:

Yeah you normally dont hear anything doing it that way. More feeling it.
You gotta remember your not going to come close to being able to exert to forces you get through your suspension when driving.

Well if Hyundai knows what's good for them they'd put in some effort to keep you on the team

On to greener pastures :goodjob:

I picked up my drop links from DAR Automotive today at just past 4 o' clock this arvie, a full 28 hours after I placed the order and requested them to ship the parts down from Johannesburg. I was impressed. They landed at R550 for both, so even cheaper than I expected!

I went to a colleague and we swopped out both links. The left side was still in good nick, but the right hand side one was toast - the ball was altogether loose in the socket and the nut was barely finger tight on the shaft. Total time to replace was approx. 1 hour.

Buttoned the whole deal up and found the bumpiest road in the suburb - not a sound to be heard :victory:
