Hi guys,

I brought a second hand 2009 sx 2.0 petrol automatic a month ago. Just after I brought it I had a problem with the ESP OFF light coming on, so after some research about this being a recall fault I took the car into a Hyundai dealership to get the break light switch replaced. It's been about 2 weeks now since they replaced it and the car has been fine up until today, the light has come back on! Has anyone had to get the switch replaced more than once? Or could it be something else?

Welcome Vanessa,

It could be something as simple as one tyre having low pressure. (A slow leak or something)  So check all 4 tyres.

Some have had the switch replaced twice where they were initially installed with the wrong switch ( different for cars with cruise control I think)

Dazz, it's a 2009 model. Not likely to have TPMS fitted. I thought it was only yje TPMS which caused a message if the pressures weren't similar.
But definitely take it back to the dealer.
If the car has fctory fitted cruise control, they could have fitted the wrong switch.

Thanks guys. I will check the tyre pressure tomorrow. That would be nice if that's all that's wrong with it. I've driven the car twice since the light came on today and it hasn't come on again. The car doesn't have cruise control. Hopefully they put the right switch in!

Ok so I checked the tyre pressure this morning. One side of the car had 35psi and the other side one was 34psi and the other 32psi. I put them all to 32psi as recommend by what it says on the door. The car was serviced by the used dealership that I brought it from... Makes me question how well they serviced it if they didn't even check the tyre pressure! Now let's hope that's why the ESP OFF light came on yesterday!

Probably not enough variation to cause the light to come on Vanessa. 35 or 36 psi is probably a better compromise for handling and longer tyre wear but it does make the ride a tad firmer. 32 is basically the recommended minimum. Some on here are keen enough to run 40 psi with a load or if towing... 

I would have thought if 3 were mid 30's and 1 was down to 25 or less that might trigger it, but we will see what happens.

The owners' manual is a bit vague about what causes the ESP light to activate but doesn't mention uneven tyre pressures. It'll be interesting to see if a small difference like 3psi has any effect.
You can test one other thing. If the switch is faulty your brake lights will either not work or there will be a slight delay in them coming on after you apply the brakes. But only if the EPS light is on. So if it comes on again, back your car up to a wall (or in your garage) and apply the brakes. If they don't work or delay in coming on ( a few seconds IIRC), then the switch is at fault.
Obviously, if this is the case, be aware that people behind you may not know you're braking.

Darn I was hoping it was just the tyres! Lol the light hasn't come on again yet, so I'm wondering what triggers it! My boyfriend took a video while the light was on yesterday incase we have to take it back to Hyundai. If it is the brake light switch again, why would it need replacing after only 2 weeks? Shouldn't they be putting in a different type of switch that will last!
