75,000k service 2011 FD

Had the wife's FD i30 in for its 75k service yesterday...

New brake pads.....Sold mine with the originals still in at 136k. Very disapointed in the wife  :disapp:

Still 211,000k between the two cars on one set of pads isn't too bad I suppose  :cool:
  • A woman drove me to drink and I didn't even have the decency to thank her..

I sold my FD at 136k as well still with the originals.
But if she's stop/start in the city, it would make a difference.

anyone replaced the disks yet? did you measure it after 136kkm?
I can't comment on the replacement but I checked mine out the other day when I inspected my pads.

My car is currently on 224K km and the discs are probably 0.8mm worn on each braking surface compared to the ridge on the extreme outside of the disk, so 1.6mm worn down across the entire disk

I'll try and find the measures of new and max worn. The thing is you must measure the width of the "double" disc.

I have found it. For my FD model made in Europe nee disks have 23mm and need replacement when reached 21.6.
This is from memory of this morning,  I hope I remembered it well.

This obviously means that the (sum) net wear must not exceed 1.4 mm.

New ones are 23. When they get to 21.6 they should ve replaced.
That means they can be worn up to 0.7 mm per side,  or 1.4 in sum.

I never had the rotors on my old Holden Barina machined during the whole 420,000k I owned the car... :whistler:

The last time I had new front brake pads fitted I made the decision to fit them without machining as the rotors would have been under the legal limit if they had been.
Brakes still worked fine...  :victory:

sorry, I didn't understand the previous (sort of rhetorical) question.
But the answer is,  no. Because in the middle is no material - for better coolong. Anyway, I don't know how thez calculate their limits but i guess its ok if you go a few tens of mm further..

Ah, I just realised, silly me, this is disc width, not pad width. Yes, machining improves durability and quicker bedding of new pads. When the disc is too thin, pad travel may be limited, risking full effectiveness of braking. I too have had pads fitted without machining due to time constraint with no problem. :victory:

someone said to me that if pad lasted 100 000 km it means I have a type of disk which changes with the pads.
I was surprised as I think 3 pair pads change to one disk change is normal...
Anyhow, I plan to change the disks when my second pair of pads wears out.

Discs are fine unless they are scored, have hot spots, or are under thickness AFTER machining.
If they were used in competition,  both pads and rotors would be replaced long before worn out, just as a precaution.

Yep, my rule of thumb too. In general, if the car lives on sealed roads it will not pick up stones etc that score the discs. Outback roads payout on cars in many ways..
