Hi,
I have found the steering wheel plastic is starting to crack (2010 FD)  Has anyone tried repairing this with a tape or cover?
I was also considering trying tennis racket handle tape . . .

Any thoughts . . ?

      Caloundra, Queensland.
Wow. I haven't seen this in modern cars.
It's not uncommon for the padding to come loose from the steel centre of the rim. That can be repaired by injecting the same or similar stuff to what they use in windscreen chip repairs.
I think I'd be investing in a good quality leather steering wheel cover.

Several people on this forum have fitted laced covers.

If you use the forum search button and look for "steering wheel cover" you will see lots of posts on the subject.

Is that on the bottom of the steering wheel?

With so many wrecked i30 around, I'd get a good used wheel. Loctite 480 and a large syringe injected works well for delaminating wheel outers.

No, on the top RH side where it gets the most use and is in the sun.

I wonder how difficult they are to replace?

There are a great range of stitchable "leather" steering wheel covers on Ebay (from about A$5) I think I chose a medium priced one A$11 (no expense spared) last time I bought one.

They come with heavy duty thread, but you can use fishing line instead. I found that hat elastic was good too as you can adjust the tension to get a better fit and it comes in different colours (I like the look of red stitching)  :goodjob:

potentially this guide has enough info for you to decide.

:link: HOW TO - adding steering wheel volume controls!!

I think the important parts would be attention to detail, isolating power, photographing and marking mating parts prior to removal, eg wheel and shaft, clockspring.

I've removed a wheel off a Holden astra with air bag and clockspring the only mistake a made there was i powered the ignition withthe airbagoff.that triggered a fault code and I found that any safety codes to do with airbags etc need a dealer scantool to reset but fortunately there were enough chinese knock offs so a $20 tool sorted that.

Thanks but sounds a bit much for me.  Will go with the cover.

Wouldn't think it would be a huge job for your mechanic at the next service.
