My daughter had her 2013 gd i30 petrol in for a 60.000km service today at the Hy dealer. It has only done 30.000km but time wise it was due for service. She was told by the technician that it needed a decarbon as it was quite bad at a cost of $129. She did not want it done until she found out more about it as the car is running fine. My question is, how did the technician know it was required ?  On inspection when she came home the intake hose to the throttle body has clearly not been removed ( still covered in dust ) neither has the inlet manifold. She was also told they had specialised equipment that attached to the throttle body that used compressed air.Reason we kept with the dealer was to maintain our road side assist and any recalls that may be required. :undecided:

Cheeky buggers :disapp: any of the 1.8ltr engines I've looked at never need the throttle body cleaned as there is no breather line like in the 1.6ltr engines, the manifold to valves might be due for a clean and a can of cleaner from supercheap :link: Nulon Foaming Air Intake Cleaner - 150g - Supercheap Auto will do the job at a fraction of the service charge.

Yeah, Sounds like a grab at $129. If it's just the TB should be easy enough to take the intake off and check out if it's dirty but are they talking decarbonisation of the entire engine?

If it's running fine  and economy is normal nothing irrregular happening I'd save the $129.

TB can build up with gunk from the gases from the rocker cover if they are fed in there.

My old Magna would need a clean every now and then to stabilise the idle.

Thanks guys, just as I thought, I told my daughter before she took her car in not to agree to any extras until she phoned me for confirmation.  I have often in the past on other vehicles cleaned the throttle body by just removing the air intake and a quick squirt of cleaner. Still like to know how the Tech supposedly checked, as I said no evidence what so ever that he checked anything. Thanks for the link Craig $19 is a bit different from $129.  Gerard I don't think they were talking about complete engine decarb, knowing the dealers I would have thought they would want more than $129 but I could be wrong.  Thanks once again  :goodjob2:

They tried that one on us before the 3 year service on Trish's tourer. We recommend an injector clean at $129.. I told them to pi$$ off...
