Hello this is my first post. I have been looking at your forum for a few weeks now and have made the plunge to post my first post. I have trawled the internet, asked dealers all to no avail, so I’m hoping that someone on here can answer my question regarding Hands-free Bluetooth Calls.
If I have my Samsung S8+ phone in my car, with all of the latest updates, in a 2018 I30 PD2. When I am  connected to Bluetooth I am able to receive calls via the head unit as I would expect. I can answer the phone and hang up using the steering wheel controls and speak hands-free with the caller. No issues at all. However, if I try to initiate a call using the Voice Recognition button on the steering wheel, I get a message on my head-unit saying that “This feature is only available when a phone supporting Android Auto or Apple Car Play is connected via USB”

As part of my testing I have tried my phone in my wife’s car, a 2017 Honda VTIs and I also have the same issue, that is that it won’t make hands-free calls when the Voice Recognition button on the steering wheel is pressed. Just to make things even more interesting, my wife has an iPhone and it will make hands free calls in her car via Bluetooth with no issues, however to add more a complex layer to this issue her phone will not make hands-free calls via Bluetooth in my car, the same message as I receive as mentioned is displayed on the head-unit. I have removed the Bluetooth profile from my phone and my car and have repaired the phone to the car.

Another bizarre thing is that I can initiate a phone call via the call button on the steering wheel, which brings up my phone book on the head-unit and then, using the up down controls that are used for the volume; i can use them to scroll up or down to select the required phone number and then make the call by pressing the call answer button on the steering wheel.
So, there are two possible scenarios here, Android does not work with Bluetooth hands-free and/or Hyundai does not allow Hands-free calling using the Voice recognition button via the steering wheel controls.

I’m hoping that someone can give me a definitive answer as to why this is occurring, either because of design, or some update that needs to be done on either my car or Android, the dealers standard answer is that that’s the way it works.

Welcome,

It is by design for some stupid reason. I have a Samsung S8 (not +)

I can initiate calls via the voice recognition button only using Android Auto (which obviously needs to be installed and initialised on your device) You also need to have the phone connected via USB. Apparently there may be a way of using Android Auto wirelessly using a suitable USB WiFi dongle and an additional app, but I haven't tried it yet.

Hope that helps.

Yep, normal stuff from forward-thinking Hyundai

Same here in my Ioniq.

Right. So you have two distinct situations to begin with.

1. Phone connected via bluetooth

2. Phone connected via USB

If you use 1., you cannot use the steering wheel button to issue a verbal command, because that is an Android Auto feature. If you want to make use of that button, plug your phone into the USB port. Same (by far and large) goes for Apple Car Play. Both of these work via USB cable connection, not bluetooth.

If you cannot be troubled to plug in the phone, you have no choice but use the steering wheel buttons to bring up the phone book and dial from there, as described.

To top all this off, car makers implement things differently, hence the Honda doesn't work exactly like Hyundai does.

I have the same experience with my Note 8.  You must have the USB cable connected and Android Auto running to use the voice command button on the steering wheel.

I get around this by not connecting the cable and use Google assistant.  I say OK Google, wait for the tone, then call .... . I also use it to navigate to an address and while navigating turn tolls on or off.  Means I don't have to touch the phone at all.

Had similar issue till I found out my Samsung J7 needed to be plugged into the USB port but then all was well :head_knock: hope that helps and I'm not simply failing to understand the problem.  :victory:
