At the moment the cloud of ash from the erupting Icelandic volcano has entered the upper jetstream and has closed Scottish airspace.  The ash is working it's way South and has affected routes from Birmingham northwards also.  It is expected to reach into continental Europe in the next few days.

Scottish airspace being closed has an impact on all flights to the US, since the North Atlantic Tracks take flights from London over Prestwick/Glasgow, then up to Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland before entering the US, so extensive disruption to many services over the coming weekend is expected.

Fjall(a) = Mountain
Jökull = Glacier

Poor man had probably been practicing for hours    We shouldn't laugh, imagine some of us trying to correctly pronounce some of the Welsh place names.  I've got a Welsh friend and even she can't say some of them.  Some place names just aren't meant to be spoken by people who don't speak the local language.

My long trip south took me back to Birmingham Airport to pick up my i30 this evening. Thank god I was in the posh seats, There looked to be little space to spare in the packed regular carriages.

At the airport was there was an eerie hush, I felt like I was playing a bit part in an episode of Survior (or in "I am legend" for those who don't know the BBC survivor series). No queues, hardly any people to be seen anywhere.

They seemed to be trying to squeeze lots of building maintenance into the unexpected close down.

None of the newsreaders in Australia I have heard have even attempted the correct name of the volcano.   

 It is known as............ 'The Volcano In Iceland'.  I suppose they think we all know which one they mean.

Volcanic and earthquake activity seems to have really ramped up in the last few months (or is it just my imagination?) I know there are always earthquakes and volcanos erupting on a regular basis but our news seems to be mentioning one or the other every few days at the moment
