Hi, a friend has an i30 1.6 turbo diesel 2012, it takes a lot of cranking to start from cold. i assumed it would be faulty glo plugs but i have looked at the back of the engine and cannot see anything that resembles them. Do you need to remove the exhaust heat shield to find them?
i was wondering if it is direct injection the injectors could do with injector cleaner mixed in with the fuel.
any ideas please?
regards
carl

How many miles? Most likely the plugs, or plug relay if it only happens when cold. You might also smell diesel from the exhaust if so. And white smoke during the startup.

The plugs are quite well hidden between the engine and firewall. Look harder. There is a wire going to the plug rail from the left side of the engine. It is hold in one of the clips on top of the engine. Follow the electric wire to metal rail. Remove the rail and the glow plugs are underneath that.

Definitely has glow plugs. There is a light but it doesn't stay on long in warm weather. If it's not coming on at all, maybe a fuse has blown or something.???

Top right hand image.
On start up on the dash it will be red when warming up, then green when its warmed, then disappear shortly after. Colder it is, the longer it will take (still not long tho)

Glow plugs are a pain to get to right at the back of the engine, they will be attached to this thing :
