Hi Folks

My second post after saying hi so hello to all out there from a sunny but cold Norfolk, UK.

I bought a blue i30 1.6CRDi yesterday knowing it had the EML on. OBD says camshaft position. The engine takes a few revolutions to start but runs smoothly after that. If the remaining miles is right it seems to be doing OK to the gallon, no smoke, smooth etc. No sign of leaks. Temps good. Drives really well. Battery's 12.6v open circuit. Looks in really good condition with 95k. Just the plastic engine cover missing.

I did search the forum first and know the EML on and camshaft position isn't unusual. I'm intending to replace either or both the crankshaft and camshaft sensors as suggested but could you help me with a few questions?

1. While reading about the problem I read that folks were advising to "clean out the gauze in the oilway". I can't find any reference in the (not very good) manual or online to the position of the gauze and even if it related to the 1.6CRDi or not. Even youtube failed me... One of the posts implied that cleaning it could even cure the problem. Could anyone tell me where it is and how to get to it?

2. The local Hyundai dealer wants about £250 for the two original part sensors, one with and one without the loom. My local garage warned me off pattern parts and said they'd seen several failures but they're way cheaper. Any thoughts on this please? If some pattern parts are OK. Any good makes?

3. As it's currently our only car at the moment I'll be driving it a few miles before I get the parts to fix it. Previous owner says he 's driven it a fair way with the light on with no problems... yet. Obviously I'll get it done as soon as but any thoughts on this?

4. When I looked at pattern parts and put my registration in it returned a list of different makes. Small pictures but some look different. Are there different designs for the same engine?

Sorry for the long post! I'd really appreciate it if anyone can help I will post back with any results or experiences of course to help anyone else.

Me personally, I'd replace the camshaft sensor first with a pattern part like Lucas or Febi bilstein, I've used their sensors in the past and they are good quality, then work from there if that doesn't fix it, clear the codes after replacement.

I think I've found out what's meant by the "gauze". It seems to be the filter at the bottom of the oil control valve for the CVVT oil input. Looks fun to get to. I also found a yt video on cleaning the CVVT valve. Given this is free I'll give it a go first and post back with the result.

Isn't cvvt, variable valve timing? I don't think the diesel engine has that.

Doh! That would explain a lot. A quick google confirms no CVVT on diesels. Thanks - you saved me a lot of freezing cold frustration tomorrow morning. Its late now and everything is currently frozen solid out there.

The confusion arose from me not being able to find a good paper service manual and buying and downloading one from "easymanuals". They have some in pdf format (I bought one for our Octavia) which are fine and a few hundred Mb but the i30 was a 32Gb download that gets you a virtual machine version that loads up Windows XP.

You put the VIN in for it to select the correct engine. What could go wrong? Well, what they're selling is the database from the GDS OBD tool. Lot's of info on multiple cars but now I know to use with caution!
The search feature was clunky to say the least and has obviously popped up the detail from a petrol engine. Nice.

I previously looked at a sample from the Haynes Autofix range of service manuals but it seems really basic compared to their trusty long running paper versions. 
Do you know if there's a reliable service manual for the diesels?

Just a little more info to anyone who reads this (after a bit of a Octavia turbo fail hiatus) :

I replaced both the camshaft and crankshaft sensors with not change. Wow the crankshaft sensor was awkward and getting the cable cleated halfway down it's length was a miracle.

No change. I had a word with an auto electrician and he says that he thinks it's likely a worn camchain. Not something I'll attempt and looks like it'll be a few quid.
