Hi all! Long time since I’ve been here. Hope every one is well.

My i30 (GD MY14 Premium) has developed the dreaded steering knock issue. She just went in for her 120k service and I mentioned that the car has developed a “loose knock” feeling in the steering wheel when driving at low speeds and that I can feel any bumps coming up through the steering wheel.

My mechanic knew immediately what the issue was and said “needs a new bushing”. Couple of questions though:

1) after doing some research I can see the bushing is a tiny little star shaped piece of plastic. I understand how this can cause the steering knock and loose feeling in the wheel. But can this tiny piece of plastic also be the cause of me now feeling bumps through the steering wheel? When driving over speed bumps or pot holes the whole steering wheel shakes, it’s pretty intense.

2) My mechanic quoted me $1200 to replace the bushing!! Looking around the forum it seems like the average quote is about ~$400. This is my trusted local family mechanic that has been with our family for years! So I would hope he isn’t taking the piss. But I assume his quote seems very unreasonable?

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated!

$1200 is crazy.
The $400 figure is much more accurate.

You’ve got plenty of specialist options in Wagga Wagga.

Yeah, I paid around $500.  It's all labour cost. The part itself is very cheap.
