It's defo as stated before - a sharp turn anticlockwise. You'll need a strong hand, but I guess you've been down that path...

but on a bit of a more serious note, looking at http://www.koreanautoimports.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=31_529_201&products_id=850 there appears to be clips and a possible screw/allen key hole in the centre? I have no idea how you intend on getting the clips out but maybe you can contact KAI and see if they can scan the instructions since you *cough* are interested in purchasing this item from them but want to know how to go about it first *cough*   :whistler:

Waja, I contacted this distributor and they said they do not provide advice on removing the existing shift knob and to get a mechanic to do the installation. I'm a bit miffed to say the least.

Shambles, that method may work for a manual gear knob, but the auto is quite different. It looks as though the chrome surround below the actual knob might unclip and slide downward, exposing the fittings that secure the knob to the shaft. I've tried to gently lever the chrome surround off, but it doesn't want to move.

So I'm still looking for some advice on how to do this.

Could it be possible that the chrome surround unscrews [to reveal further fittings]?

i just went and had a look at the wife's cw shifter knob and i tried to unscrew the chrome collar under the knob. i even tried to pull down on it but still nothing. i didn't want to try prying it off with a flat head screwdriver in case i damaged the chrome. i also tried to screw off the actual knob but it doesn't seem to screw on like the manual gear knob does. i gave this a try not long ago.  it is possible that under the chrome collar is a lock nut you need to undo, and then screw the knob off.

well the link from KAI shows that there is meant to be a screw hole on the side so on that basis, the only way is that the chrome has to be removed somehow. as 2i30s said, you could use a flat head screwdriver similar to what they did in this video

Thanks Carib looking at that picture it definitely looks like the silver collar slips down and then you push those two lugs in to release the knob .. but how much force does that collar require I wonder?

If my knob was that hard to get off I reckon I would leave it alone UM ..  :whistler:

Thanks for the pic Carib. After looking at the Korean Auto Importers site, I was aware that that was how the two pieces fitted together. The collar must be moved down to reveal the retaining lug or clips for the actual knob and as Dazzler says, how much force is needed. I have had a gently go at it with a flat blade screwdriver but no luck.

AND I agree with you Dazzler ... leave your knob alone  :faint: :faint: :whistler: :whistler:

Do you think so??

I would have said that the two lugs do nothing more than hold the silver collar in place once installed.
The issue then is how to get that collar off to expose the grub screws which hold the entire knob in place.

UM, is there any downward movement on the knob available, it looks to me like a push down (or perhaps a pull-up??) would pull the retaining lugs in and then you hold the silver collar whilst releasing the downward pressure which then allows the collar to slip off.

That's how I see it. The question is how to cause those two lugs to flex inwards to be able to free the silver collar from them. Pushing down on the gearstick wouldn't work IMO but pulling up slightly might be what the designer had in mind, bearing in mind you wouldn't ordinarily pull the knob in an upwards direction.

We'll get this sorted soon

Looking at it again, I wonder if the chrome collar needs to unscrew a half turn to allow it to slip down past the lugs, you know it could have a wider internal diameter at 9 or 3 o'clock than it does at 12 or 6 which locks it into place??

Thanks for the input Bumpkin, Shambles & Dazzler. I have tried to move the chrome collar up, down, sideways, clockwise and anti-clockwise...it will not budge. I've tried pushing, pulling and turning the gear shift knob...nothing moves. Maybe a hacksaw might be the answer

This is going to end up being so obvious.

My [next] bet is that the silver collar is disposable - fix and forget. They clipped it on at the factory and it isn't going anywhere, unless cut free from the plastic retaining tabs. What's the chance a new gearstick comes with a replacement collar?

I agree, Shambles. It will be so obvious it will seem ridiculous. BUT I don't want to be he first one to destroy the chrome collar and find it can't be easily replaced.

Two thoughts...
1. Do we have any Hyundai technicians or mechanics in the club?
2. Maybe one of our Korean members could solve the problem. They seem to have every accessory know to man on their i30s

How about, two flat micro-screwdrivers or bits of plastic/metal inserted upwards to push the lugs in, a bit like those U hooks you get with stereos??

Bumpkin I tried that using two (wait for it  ) butter knifes to gently try to lever the collar down and to also try to find any concealed clip or retaining lug...but no luck.

Does the silver collar flex at all?

Good idea about asking our Korean fiddlers cousins. I'm not a member of their main club (I think you need some kind of national identity card to join up) but I seem to remember seoul-mate once managed it, and he can speak their lingo too. Bargain.

There is no flex at all in the chrome collar Shambles.  I've tried to gently squeeze it to make it distort, thinking that may help it release...but no luck. Hacksaw is looking good

Yeah well before you destroy it (which I have to say would by now have happened if it were my problem) try sending a PM to D-Rob to see if he's a member of i30club.net... as you say they must have gone down this path ...

well...while procrastinating from exams this coming week, on HMA service I managed to find this  :)

this should be the solution to your questions!

If you want to check it out on HMA service, I found it at "ELANTRA(HD) >2008 > G 2.0 DOHC > Body (Interior and Exterior) > Interior > Console > Repair procedures"
