well...while procrastinating from exams this coming week, on HMA service I managed to find this

Thanks for the illustration WaJa. I have had five different people have a go at removing the chrome sleeve without success. It is impossible to get any real grip on the chrome surface to allow you to twist it anti-clockwise. I've tried using a cloth to get some traction, but still no luck..

I'm afraid I'm stumped

Will the chrome sleeve not nudge slightly upwards, say a couple of mm, before you start the twisting thing?


Best I can suggest now, is get hold of a couple of kiddies erasers/rubbers and try to grip your thing using them as resistance against the shiny part

Have you tried gripping the collar with some form of plier??

wrap a cloth around it first,then try the above mentioned pliers.

Get an elastic band and wrap it around the chrome, should give a better grip, alternatively try removing whilst wearing rubber gloves.

I would wrap some masking tape around the chrome bit and give it a gentle tap underneath and on each side with a small hammer then try twisting it again first by hand and then if that doesnt work with pliers .. but leave the tape on and then wrap in a cloth as well as the teeth of the pliers can still bite into the chrome

Figured it out. I used a plastic card (old credit card) between the collar and shifter to give a bit of room to get a point of a paring knife in to depress one of the tabs. once the one side was released I rocked the collar the other way and down it slid. Needed it off as well to complete my double din DVD install with headrest screens.

Which aftermarket knobs fit the i30? I've seen some nice one manufactured by Razo but I'm not sure they will fit.

Anything that fits a manual one should fit, there is no button on the auto shifter either
