Anyone who buys the latest wheels magazine will get their privileges cut off...

They did a test of 11 different small -medium vehicles and the i30 petrol sx came in 10th and the wife's Tiida 11th (last)  

The only redeeming feature was they said nice things about the diesel...

I was going to buy it up until I saw the result of the comparo as there was an interesting article about the new 2011 Ford Falcon GT HO..

For some reason wheels has never been keen on the i30 ...

Not happy ..   might buy one to use as toilet paper

Its pretty common knowledge that Holden pay kickbacks to Wheels.  Some Holden fans get pretty angry when this is suggested to them tho.  The Cruze was fourth or so in that list, obviously knocked up the ranks a fair bit by $$$ from Holden.  Only reason they didnt put it number one is that it would make it too obvious they were not fair comparisons.  Have a look at the comments on the Cruze review on caradvice - I wonder who that guy Robin Graves is?

I stopped buying Wheels magazine in 1982, after they voted the Holden Camira "Car Of The Year", probably the most atrocious piece of rubbish ever to grace Australian roads. My ex-Father-In-Law bought a new one on the strength of that win a week after they went on sale, I had the misfortune to drive it from Bunbury WA to Perth a week later. By Mandurah (around 100k's) the roof lining had collapsed into the cabin. 50 k's later the electrics failed. After repairs in Perth, the front suspension damper packed up on the way home back to Bunbury. And so it went on.........rust after the first year, trim falling off, engine blowing smoke. If anyone is in any doubt about the quality of that vehicle, just look up "Holden Camira" in Wikipedia and read the whole sorry tale. Is Holden's quality control any better now? Most surveys put Holden and Ford as the two bottom brands in terms of customer satisfaction. My i30? Approaching a year old, not a single fault. I know which reviews I will be taking seriously..........reviews by independant motoring organisations like the NRMA, RAC & AA, who have nothing but good things to say about the i30 & the unlimited kilometer warranty that goes with it.

I agree wholeheartedly... except.. I did buy a Camira wagon in 1984 (brand new) and it did the job for 12 months until I bailed out of it b4 their reputation destroyed resale value completely

Common issues

All Camira models suffered from some common issues. These issues are one the reasons why the car never garnered significant sales figures.[3]

    * Rust is evident in almost all sedan models underneath the rear windshield. On wagon models, rust is usually evident in the bottom of the tailgate due to the lack of water drainage.

    * Models equipped with a manual transmission had a clutch firewall cracking issue, where the clutch mount would tear the firewall mounting structure. This is easily rectified or prevented early on, but advanced stages of cracking are difficult to repair due to the awkward location and welding requirement.

    * On models fitted with an automatic transmission, the lockup torque converter switch malfunctions and keeps the torque converter locked in third gear when slowing down, stalling the engine upon the car coming to standstill. This is due to the poor durability of the plastic switch.

    * The engine control unit is notorious for problems. Cracks in the printed circuit board will often cause the engine to stall at speed if the board bends, for instance through heat expansion.

    * Engine mount breakages are known to occur, especially when driven roughly. This problem is particularly pronounced in the later fuel injection developments, which resulted in increased power and correspondingly increased stress on the Camira's rubber mounts.

    * The water manifold at the back of the engine is made of hard polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and can split after many heating and cooling cycles, necessitating replacement.

The Used Car Safety Ratings, published in 2008 by the Monash University Accident Research Centre, found that 1982–1989 Holden Camiras provide a "significantly worse than average" level of occupant safety protection in the event of an accident.

Yes, I remember the "cracked printed circuit board/engine stall at speed" problem, it often used to happen at 120 kmh when overtaking a road train. When it happened, I wish I had known about the "significantly worse than average level of occupant safety protection in the event of an accident" problem. But Hey!........ I was driving Wheels Magazine Car Of The Year...why would I have cared?

I had a flick thru Which?Car in Sainsburys supermarket this morning and was delighted to see that they had the i30 (all variants) at 4 stars equal with the Ford Focus, BMW1, Cee'd and Vauxhall Ashtray and the Honda Civic and Citroen C4 at 3 stars

They went on to say that Hyundai can now be reasonably regarded as a quality manufacturer and that the pick of the bunch in their opinion was the CW 1.6CRDi.

Stick that in yer pipe Wheels mag

PS- They also pointed out that the stop/start version will be in the UK this summer (whenever that is  )

When stationery instead of idling the car engine turns off.  When you wish to move the engine fires up and off you go.
 
Not sure how it works. I would guess it must be some sort of automatic "hibernation type mode"

If it was priced right and still had a 5 year warranty.. I'd buy one... Guess they wouldn't launch it if they weren't confident of the technology...
