Back in 1996, when the first Boxster appeared, it had a 2.5-litre flat six engine. It ended that run with up to 3.8-litres and we’d grown to love the performance and sound and character of that big, naturally aspirated engine.

Yet here we are 20 years later looking at a Boxster which, at its largest, is a 2.5-litre and, in the form tested here is a 2.0-litre engine down from the 2.7 litre equivalent on the previous car. A flat-four. Turbocharged. Is this progress we ask?
