Has anyone had a problem with the clutch?

When cold the bite seems to be harsh and quick to engage.

The odd thing it only happens once each day, first thing in morning and more noticable when damp or wet!

Start car, drive away.  I then stop at a junction , approx 200 yards and when I move off it's there.

It's an odd feeling and what I can only call judder.

It does not happen again that day even though the car has been parked up in work for 8 hours.

Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Eye,

That is strange.. My clutch gets a hard life sometimes stopping and starting up steep parts of my block (but no judder probs yet) - touch wood!

I've never experienced this with my i30 but with many other cars I have. I've heard (long time ago) that this humidity related phenomenom started to emerge when the asbestos was removed from the clutches. IMO this is pretty common phenomenom in many cars but never heard this occuring in an i30.

Was passing dealers on Thursday so called in and explained problem.

They are to take it in next week, overnight, so they can test first thing. BUT...........................  I bet it doesn't happen.

Just as a side comment.
Today before I moved off I turned the ESP off. At the first junction, stopped. On moving off it seemed a smoother pick up and no judder.
I wonder if this a coincidence.

Well the car went into the dealers overnight so they could reproduce first thing and yes it juddered for them just as I explained it.

Thank you. I'm not imagining it!

I'm told it's to do with the on board computer going through a testing routine re the braking/ESP system to ensure all is working correctly.

They tell me that they have had a few cars doing the same and there is no fix.

So guess what "It's a feature of my car".

Has anyone else had this or heard of it?

never had that happen eye, don't have ESP on mine. but the ECU controls the engine speed if motor needs to speed up and you are not useing throtle going up an incline, i like that feature.

Has anyone else had this or heard of it?

I have but not with an i30.

Some cars locally here seem to suffer it moreso than others, usually its just as they are reversing out driveways and taking off.

I'd ask them what theyre doing to try and resolve it , i.e. replacing the ecu for you , replacing abs module, esp module, replacing abs sensors @ wheels etc.

When ouri30 had issues they had techs from Korea come over looking into it, is the same happening, what date ...

Dont just leave it as an 'undocumented feature' :)

Do some of your own tests, try pulling the abs fuse, esp fuse etc and see if you get the same feel each morning, maybe just turn off ESP a few mornings and make sure its not a conincidence. (ofcourse be aware youve disabled some nice safety features., you can put the fuses back in fairly quickly since it does it so close to home)

Did it occur after a service, did they flash your ECU ? can they flash an older version back on it to test etc.

ouri30
There's some good advice there, EpOcH.

That is the way I would approach it as well.

I have never experienced anything like the issue eye30's i30 is exhibiting.  I would say that the smoothness of take off and the clutch in general is the best I have had in ant vehicle I have had.

Hope you sort it out and get Hyundai to investigate.

Bob

I've been doing a bit of reseach on the net and what I'm experiencing is termed in the trade as clutch chatter.

Anyone else heard of this or had experience of it?

Booked it in again next week.

I'm leaving it overnight again but this time I'm going to the garage first thing and either I'll drive the drive the car or the mechanic will from cold.  This way I'll be able to show/tell them when it happens.

Will update etc etc

Update:

Left car overnight at the dealers and went back this morning.

I drove car from cold with the techi on board and yes it happened just as I said.

He was stumped for an answer and will have to get onto the techi at HY HQ.

Will update again when he/they fathom out what is causing the judder.

Garage phoned today but they have not yet received an answer as to how to resolve judder.

As the garage have acknowledged, twice, there is an issue I'll not be letting it drop.

Probably not related but I have noticed that the engine shakes quite violently if I venture below 1500 RPM in 5th gear.  While I'm happy to accept that the revs are too low for the conditions and that a change down is reasonable, I am a little surprised that it does this to the extent it does.  Suggests that the engine mounts may be a little inadequate.

I mention this as a possible factor in your "judder" as insufficient engine mount damping could exacerbate any lack of smoothness in the clutch take-up.

Thanks for that info Pip.

I'll mention next time I'm chatting to them to see what they say.

Now I've experienced very mild clutch judders on a damp and chilly morning a couple of times. The judders felt similar to those I've experienced in many other vehicles earlier in similar conditions but were mild and occasional. I hope this phenomenon won't get as worse as it was in my former car  :)

Spot on.

Update.

Garage had car for 2 night.

Guess what  ------ It didn't happen as the weather was mild.
Hy Techi have not heard of this so it's a matter of wait and see. So no further forward.

At least I've logged the problem so if and when they agree a fix it will be covered under warranty.

I guess the auto drivers at this point are just holding themselves back from saying "Just buy an AUTOMATIC!"

Thanks for updates though. My car has the judder, but it's every now and again, so I don't think anything of it. I'll know who to contact if the problem does become more prevalent.

Well............................. my garage told me that there is a known judder/selection problem with the auto's and all Hy dealers (UK) have been informed.

Having not actually noticed any Clutch Judder in my CRDi .. I'll sort of go out on a limb and suggest....

Could it just be vibration from the diesel motor when cold coming through the gearbox and clutch...

As someone said (Pip?) maybe the engine mounts are not isolating the motor enough?

Do we know if it is just the diesel manual & auto that have had the problem (or petrol models as well)

Don't think so as it is not that sort of judder.

It happens just as you get past the bite and drive is taken up.

maybe the engine mounts are not isolating the motor enough?

They tell me they have had it up and check things underneath. So I would expect if anything was amiss they should have seen it.
I've a set of ramps so when this bl**dy rains stops I might look myself.
