G'day all,

I picked up my brand new vivid blue i30 SLX Manual hatch yesterday, and I've spent the last two days driving it in varying conditions (windy curvy roads in Warrandyte, evening peak hour traffic on the bloody Monash, middle-of-the-day traffic around Melbourne). I have particularly noticed today that it stalled quite a few times - when I was ready to take off at the lights. It's taken a while to get to know the friction point of this clutch....

This is the first brand-new car I have owned (and thus 'broken in') so I don't know if I should attribute this seemingly over-sensitive clutch to the sub-1000km breaking-in period, or if it's my driving style.

I would welcome any comments. I'm completely LURRRRVING the car by the way!

Cheers, Anna

Welcome Anna,

Glad you Lurrrrv the car.. sounds like you got the petrol model the Diesel has an anti stall function... Maybe you are not giving her enough revs at takeoff?

What car did did you own before this one Anna?

My Daughter just picked a manual SX and she hasn't had said anything about the clutch.

I am wondering if it might be that you were simply used to your old clutch, and you will adjust to this one in time.

Hey Shambles, I stalled my diesel the other day... , mind you I was towing a Nissan Navara with a whole string of boats, trailers, caravans, and other attachments behind it, a Falcon Ute, and a whole PUB..  (Scenes from some local car adverts).

100 more revs I reckon, then the turbo would have sorted it all out !!!!!

Diesel? they use that in tractors don't they?

Welcome Anna, I'm sure you'll love your car and yes I know what you mean about the clutch, feels different to some other cars. Nothing wrong with it though, I'm sure you'll get used to it.   :D

Welcome Anna

I stalled mine a lot in the first couple of weeks also, I think it is because the engine is so quiet (cos we don't have the "above standard" (according to the Dr that is Shambles) tractor version  ) that you can't hear it and then back off a bit when they start moving.

Cheers

Good point Brian - it IS such a quiet engine huh??? I've not stalled today - woo hoo! I notice you're from Aberdeen - my partner here in Melbourne is an Aberdonian - he grew up in Bridge of Don! Small world huh?

Cheers, Anna

I stalled a couple times in my first week too, but I put it down to a new car and not knowing the friction point well enough. I'm a lot better now though :)

I haven't had a problem with stalling the engine, just tending to feed the power on a bit early during gear changes and over-revving a bit.........

I'm giving it a bit too much power during gear changes too :) Taking a while to get used to it. Almost at 1000kms and the first service :)

Hi Anna - We also stalled our ULP (petrol) SLX a few times until we got used to the almost absolute silence of the engine - it wasn't that the clutch picked-up particularly low; just that we were used to the  "rattly" tones of our diesel 4x4 and could easily (or lazily) tell by the noise when the clutch was starting to bite. After a few days we got used to the i30 clutch and we now find it very nice and responsive - plus it's immensely enjoyable to be driving something that doesn't sound like an old truck :-)

We picked up our 1.4 petrol I30 four weeks ago and since then my wife, myself, my son and daughter have all had problems with the clutch engagementpoint and the car stalling. We have gradually become accustomed to it and it happens far less no but it still does occasionally and is accompanied by a clutch burning smell. We are all experienced drivers and never had a car that was so difficult to get accustomed to and the car is booked into dealers today for them to check it out. Point is that a modern family car should not need this amount of 'getting used to' and the demonstrator i30 did not have this level of sensitivity so something is definitely wrong. The car was chosen because one I had been lent when my Coupe was in for service was a joy to drive. This one is a bit of a mare. BTW brakes also snatch but am hoping that will improve when they wear in,

After 4 weeks they should be well and truely bedded in.

I'd be asking them to also check the brakes when it's in.
