But I've noticed a few threads on how the engine revs hard when you first start the car. Mine started doing it and (I don't know if this is in my head) I have found that if you treat it like a diesel by turning the key to ON and waiting for a couple of lights to switch off on the dash (I know I'm being very technical here), and then turn it on it doesn't do it.

like I said I don't know if it is in my head but everytime I've just waited a little bit instead of turning it all the way on it doesn't do that revving thing..

I've never had the revving problem.

I always wait a few seconds in the "ON" position before starting the engine.  During these few seconds I've noticed that there is a quiet whirring sound coming from somewhere behind me.

Maybe the fuel pump?  Maybe related to the revving problem.

But I've noticed a few threads on how the engine revs hard when you first start the car.

I don't think anyone has ever reported back on this phenomena, but in my opinion its not expected, and is worth getting the dealer to check it out. My guess is it's a glitch in the code that controls the idle air control valve.

I've been trying my method and it seems to work for me.  There's been a few times when I haven't waited and sometimes it doesn't do it but most of the time it does.  I suppose I might just wait a little while and see?

i reported on this once, and yes it still does it
it hits about 2000 rpm straight away

i did notice it settle a bit during the colder snap but seems to be coming back more as its getting hotter again but i could be imagining that . i dunno. but it definantly does rev up at the beginning of the day more than i think it 'should'.
kim i'm going to give your idea a try at least. who knows hey?

Speaking of revs... Out on the highway driving, I notice that the RPMs in 5th gear (SR 2.0 petrol) seem to sit at about 2800 rpms at 100kph, just cruising along steady.  This seems a bit high according to my previous experience with my old Nissan Pulsar Q (2002), which used to sit at about 2400 rpms in 5th gear at 100kph.  For note, I just clocked over 1000kms on the car.  What is the general experience with this?  I'm taking the car in for her 1000k first service soon and wondering if I should make this a point to the dealer...  Thanks!

On my auto i30, that sounds about right.  Here is the kph to rpm table for my car:

kph                 RPM
        1st     2nd     3rd     4th
--------------------------------------
120            7189    4635    3305
110            6590    4249    3029
100            5991    3863    2754
90              5392    3476    2479
80              4793    3090    2203
70              4194    2704    1928
60     6764  3594    2317    1652
50     5637  2995    1931    1376
40     4510  2396    1545    1102
30     3382  1797    1158
20     2255  1198

Thanks tla.  The table is very helpful.  However, there may be difference between 4 speed auto and 5 speed manual.

No, I wouldn't. These things are fixed mechanically and cannot vary. There is no problem with your car.
