Yes I agree winter tyres are better for you in Scandinavian countries where it snows months on end, but for us in the uk socks looks ok just for emergencies and easy to get on and off.

Where I live there is a incline to get out of the village and one winter they didn't grit the road and no one could in or out for 2 days using this road.

I might have to go up in the hills and try them and make sure I have my AA recovery card with me

Only 2 or 3 days with snow this winter so far....

Winter tyres are better for grip when temps are below +7ÂșC because of the rubber compound.

Though I suppose there isn't much call for them round your way. :)

A few years ago I considered all the options for snow and ice as I had a need to use the car evry day regardless of bad conditions. We'd had a couple of winters where we had snow/ice round here for 10 days or more in two winters.

Looked at chains but no good as the main roads got cleared and they'd wear out very quickly on tarmac. Much the same with snow socks really. So decided I'd get some Nokian WRG2s though never actually managed it by the time the need had suddenly gone.  They are a winter tyre but can be used all year round, so with my low mileage they seemed ideal.

The last few winters have been very mild round here with not much snow and ice so they'd have been wasted if I had changed. Though as Asterix points out they do have better grip when the temp drops below 7.

For an emergency, carry some nylon rope to wrap, loop & knot around each tyre :)

I don't have any but do recommend them.  This is based on an incident a few years ago where a stream of cars were waiting to get up a steep and icy hill, failing, and sliding back down.  The only car to get up it, and it did so easily, was a Saxo with socks on the front wheels!
