Been promising myself to go see this since I moved up here.
This is the year.
Watch this space.

I hope by recording my intention here, I'll actually make it happen. :whistler:

Seems like it would be well worth the effort, and quite reasonably priced too.... :goodjob:

Now that's my kind of cockpit. :goodjob2:
I remember from my school days:
"She was only the pilot's daughter, but she certainly kept her cockpit clean."
Are we allowed to say that on this forum?  :undecided: :undecided: :undecided:

Well, I went along to the open cockpit day as promised. I'm not sure how many they had through the gates over the two days but there were literally thousands there when I arrived. I spent probably a couple of hours there but it was so crowded it was a bit less enjoyable than I'd hoped.

It was almost impossible to get a clear photo of anything due to the sheer mass of people moving around. Now I'm not complaining about this. I came a way amazed at what was there and what the volunteers had achieved over the years. I will go back on a normal weekend as they're open pretty much every day of the year. I guess there'll be less people there without the extra promotions and open cockpit offering.

One other observation is that they could use at least 3 times as much space. There are planes above planes and pretty much all encroaching on one anothers spaces. However that sort of display seems to be common to museums everywhere whatever they're displaying.

Photos follow without captions as it was pretty hard to work out what was what. I'll post some signage with the displays I yhink they relate to but as I'm not a plane freak (airhead?? :snigger:), I can't guarantee each is accurate.

So if you're in the Caloundra area, I strongly recommend you take the time to visit.

They had a few old cars and bikes on display on the day, too.

And as I was leaving I saw this parked out on the road. Why would anyone go to the expense of shipping a vehicle like this all the way to Oz?

Lovely Trev - thanks for those.

I do enjoy seeing aircraft engines laid bare - something quite special there

Nice lot of pics, Trev.... :goodjob:

That "Interesting double layered propellor" is actually called a "contra-rotating propeller".
As the name implies, each set of propellers rotate in opposite directions.  This setup results in the propellors being more efficient but the advantages can be partly offset due to their extra noise and added mechanical complexity.

The cockpits were full of kids, which I guess was the purpose of the exercise.

Another important feature is the cancellation of torque reaction too. But I wouldn't want to be a bird passing through there
