Yesterday was the culmination of some preparation. My Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (GX-N1080) had reached 4.1.1 Jelly Bean before Samsung turned off updates years ago. Earlier in the week I happened across a site explaining how to get your own update to 4.4.2 Kit Kat. After carefully reading all the instructions, downloading a whopping 1.7G update file and the Odin 3.9 loader software as well as updating the W7 laptop with Samsung USB drivers, I nervously began the update.

Despite some odd screen/window freezing on W7's part, the update went very smoothly.

Anyway, who wouldn't trade a jelly bean for a kit kat?

+ On a related travel note, we're considering doing a week in Perth next month as our entitlement to a Return to Australia break from the hardships of Indonesia.

Stay indoors as it's bloody cold here

Other than the usual walk around Perth and Northbridge to get yourself acquainted with the area you'd probably like the Memorials at Kings Park and a day walking around Fremantle is nice with some historic buildings and the cafe's are nice though probably dearer than what you'd get a nice coffee over in the east.

Mt Lawley ( Beaufort st ) and Vic Park ( Albany Hwy )  are the main foodie strips with some great restaurants 5-10 minutes from Perth city

There's also the casino 5-10 minutes out of the city if you like losing money  other than that most tourists would hire a car and head south through Bunbury - Busselton and Margaret River wine region for the scenery - surf - wine and amazing food.

I remember that every time that I head to Perth I have to wind my clock back two hours and twenty years.  Remember, if it didn't happen in Perth, then it didn't happen at all.  Expect to be overcharged for everything.  Expect the locals to whinge about the weather, the price of everything, and everybody and everything from the rest of Australia.  Don't mention GST (I did once, but I think I got away with it).  If you arrive on a Sunday, don't expect anything to be opened; apparently they don't have the population to support Sunday trading (despite it being in Tasmania for over 20 years).

When I first moved to WA in 1998, all of the shops closed at 5pm on weekdays (except Thursdays, when it was late night shopping until 9pm).  Saturday trading finished at midday, and there was no Sunday trading at all.

Having moved over from Melbourne (and before that, Wagga) where the supermarkets were open 24/7, I found it interesting and backwards.

Not much has changed in 18 years IMO.

Shops like Woolworths and Coles are open till 6pm weekdays ( 9pm Thursdays) and 5pm weekends, other grocery stores like IGA and Foodworks are open till 7pm weekdays and 5 or 6pm weekends (not sure on those ones), The Spud Shed at Jandakot airport is open till 1am everyday...could be 24 hour by now

Perth city and major shopping centres around suburbia stay open till 5pm on Sundays now though I agree some later hours would be nice sometimes, I enjoyed the late night scene in Malaysia - Singapore and Vietnam.

Head out into the country areas like when I went to Augusta a couple of months ago and even the cafes were closing at 1pm on Saturdays and many wont even open the doors on a Sunday though I was surprised when I was in York a couple of weeks ago to find the shops and cafes still open at 3pm as I was starving and hanging out for a Parma

Yeah, it's a bit weird with our limited population but shop hours down here (even in Devonport with a 27k population) are better than a lot of the north island...

We often get caught out with closed shops on our mainland travel.
