I have a problem that you older users may can set my feelings at rest. First of all when my 1.6crdi starts up sounds like the old , "bag of spanners that you got on the 80 diesels", is this normal?

My second point is when putting manual gearbox into reverse, It sometimes doesn't like this and I get a bit of grinding, please tell me if this is normal on a brand new car or should I consult dealer? Thanks very much guys, I'm glad I found you club members and hope we can all become mates and meet each other from time to time. Best wishes, you can e-mail me direct at, headers59(at)aol.com. We thrilled if I get any mail. leasecontact me for anything and let us keep this group going and at the same time staying friendly, , friendly for life. That would be great. Take care guys \and girls, hope to see you on the road.

Hi de hi headers :)

Yeah that old diesel "clatter" - you get used to it over time (Fergie is my first diesel).

As for reverse, we've had discussions about this and the concensus seems to be that it's a bit hit-and-miss, getting the gear selected correctly. If you're grinding the gears then you've not quite made the selection; sometimes I have to slowly raise my clutch holding the stick in reverse until the gear finally "pops" into place (bumpkin's words).

There was discussion here https://www.i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,2823.0.html

Any of the methods suggested there will help.  The idea is to create some movement of the reverse gear during its engagement.

As everyone else has said neither of these issues is actually a problem as such (more of a feature of diesels and front wheel drives)

Good to see you so enthusiastic about our friendly club.. you are most welcome  :D

Mine is quiet compared to "normal" diesels.

It does clatter initially but will subside after a minute or so.

It is more noticable when you are outside of the cabin or if the car windows are open or the car is between solid walls etc.
