As per the known problem posted in {link removed} regarding the flexible steering coupling possibly needing attention... .

Mine now feels like it's about to fall right off.

Contacted the dealership 2 weeks back and they checked all known outstanding issues regarding steering, and no recalls or other UK-specific notes are held on the Hy system. I did mention that the issue had been noted by other members, though not of UK origin. I mentioned at the time that it is gradually deteriorating and now it's quite frightening, even when driving slowly over uneven terrain.

So, maybe an unscheduled visit in is in order...

Hmmm not good Steve, I have the rattle but only at low speed as specified in the TSB.  Having said that my Nissan Stanza had the same rattly steering noise at low speed and it went round the clock before I sold her on and never had it "fixed" :)

Idea

If it seems to be getting worse, call the RAC out while at work and get their view on it.

Well I went down and picked up my touch-up paint and took the printout from the TSB regarding the steering coupling.

They'd already found and printed the bulletin (although in a different format to the one I took in).

Yes, it is now a known issue on ALL models built between 2007 and April 2008 (dictated by VIN range). I would imagine if you don't experience the problem then it's not an issue for you.

The advisory system he was logged into said the part takes around 1 month from ordering to delivery, so as I'll be going for the 3rd service in December they said they would order it and fit it at that time.

My rattle won't get any worse before then, allegedly

Yeah, my services are running around every 7 months and my last one was in May, so Dec it is then. I'll put up with the chisel drama until then...

the part takes around 1 month from ordering to delivery,

If it "get worse" will they replace before December?

i.e I wonder if they will order now so they have it in stock if you need it before December. Or will they not actually order until the end of October expecting it to "last" 'til then.

I did ask that. Hy will not authorise a warranty repair unless the dealership has requested it "as a result of a fault diagnosis", which means I'd have to book her in so they could officially mark her as needing repair under warranty.

No big deal now as she's not rattling any worse, but they did acknowledge the fault earlier today. God I love the Hy dealerships. They know so much... when it's pointed out to them

I wonder if there is some sort of "black mark" against dealer's if they log too many warranty jobs?

My newly-adopted dealership had a look today and have decided that the flexible coupling has worn prematurely

Just like it says in the bullletin.

.. I'd be printing out the TSB we have somewhere on here and taking that with you...

True enough they hadn't seen that TSB and couldn't bring it up on their system. Sheesh. So they were grateful for the printout so they could order the part. They expect 4-6 weeks to receive it.

Thats a poor amount of time to have to wait. How do they cope with complete failures?

I can get parts at work (not cars) from the states in 2-3 days, so surey even if there inventory is in Czech/Korea they can do better.

About time they has UK located inventory......

The new washer pump will arrive in 2-3 days apparently as it's being ordered "through the usual channel" which I think he mentioned was "mobis", whereas this coupling has to be ordered through "technical" just like my windscreen was (and that also took weeks to get into the UK)

I'n sure my dealer told me that Hy UK have a depot in Warrington.  Go and collect as it's just on your way home then take it in to the dealers on your way to work.  That will save dayssssssss

Was that off the i30 TSB list or USA service site?

If so, no wonder they don't know about.

Careful with printing out 'that' TSB and providing it to a HY dealer. Hyundai Australia are not that happy about their customers knowing too much about their vehicles.

Also watch which dealer performs this TSB. I just had one take a 'short cut' with regards to that TSB, not following every step, which resulted in the steering failing (IE: Total loss of steering where the steering wheel detached from the assembly) whilst the vehicle was at highway speeds.

The dealer is refusing to admit it was their fault, and Hyundai Australia are washing their hands of it.

Be weary of who works on your vehicle!

If any other member feels a rattle through the steering column at low speeds over uneven roads, check your VIN.

If it is in the range "First production to KMHDC51ER8U098836" and you develop this problem, go see your dealership.

(that end-range value equates to 14th April 2008 as the build date at the Korean assembly plant).
