Not content with the performance of current satellite navigation systems, Swedish car maker Volvo has been experimenting with placing magnets in the road to boost the accuracy of positioning and tracking cars.

While it might sound like a strange thing to do, Volvo has undertaken a considerable amount of research into self-driving cars, and it claims the technology is key to the successful roll-out of such plans.
