I have just test driven a Hyundai i30 Classic in the UK & so much road noise, is this the same on all models or is the Comfort model with 16" wheels quieter or Premium 17" quieter..  Cheers.

The 17" wheels are by far the noisiest with Hankkok tyres- I have the i30 Premium version and speak from experience.  I have changed to Yokohama decibel tyres and they are much better as mantioned in another thread here.

However - before buying the i30 I owned an Audi A3, test drove a Golf, Skoda Octavia and Kia Ceed. There was little to choose between them in terms of road noise and I bought the best value car of the bunch.  Don't let road noise be the killer - it is a fine car.

I agree with AlanHo, VFM is what Hyundai / Kia are all about. Efficient operation & reliable performance. I will admit though, that I'd like to rip out the interior & treat my car to a full re-surfacing under the carpet with a good modern noise absorbing material, it would just cap the whole experience. That said... I've just had x2 Federal 225/45/17's fitted on the front & I swear the road noise is reduced....

I've 15'' and find that the noise is OK on most roads.

On some it is louder and on others it is not as loud
  • 1.4 Petrol Active I'm no expert, so please correct me if

Road noise in our old CRDi with 16" Kuhmos was louder than I would have liked but still better than the equivilent Mitsubishi Lancer or Mazda 3 at the time.. Trish's CW with 15" tyres seems marginally better (not great but acceptable on most surfaces)

Any car running on e.g. Michelin Energy should be really quiet, unlike running on Pilot Sport

Many wide tire grooves, makes a noisy tire. Usually this is a sign of better grip...

I believe Goodyear are thinking about branching out into that line of tyres.

My friend works there (her name is treesa)  :winker:

They will have a range of deciduous ones to save buying winter treads too  :goodjob:

There's nothing left for me.
I think I'll just leaf this alone.
But I wooden be forking out for those tyres. They're past their use by date. :-[

Back ON TOPIC

The OE tyres are definitely major contributors to road noise. As Alan says, don't let that put you off.

Babis, just to clarify, wide "radial" grooves contribute to noise. Wide "circumferential" grooves won't. but they will help with water dispersion.

Yep. Mine haven't got there yet (2,500 to go) but 25,000 will pretty much see them out (15" Hankooks).

And I got 62,000 out of my Eagle LS2000s on my Impreza.
