Hi all.
I have just bought a 2007  SR  auto. First 2 weeks it drove well but them the check engine light came on and went into limp mode. When it cooled down it was OK.  This then happened the next day both also being reasonably hot days. I took it to the local mechanic who said that the transmission sensor detected an overheat in the transmission putting it into limp home mode. He tells me that it will need an overhaul cost of a few thousand dollars. The car has done 146000 km. I am a 20 year old uni student with a part time job at Woolworths and spent every last cent on buying it and insurance.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I have no idea what to do.
my last car was a hyundai getz and sitting at an intersection someone ran up my arse righting it off.
not having much luck with hyundai.
Cheers

I would immediately suspect that the trans oil is dirty, either through not being serviced at the correct interval. If the tans is operating normally until excess heat presents, then I would suggest that an overhaul is not necessary. However, I would go to an auto workshop and have the fluid changed and also the fluid in the torque converter. Cost about #300. That should fix your problems.

@140+ k's The fluid should be on it's 2nd change by now.

Sorry you're off to a bad start.

I'm not a tecchie, but we have 2 autos and 1 has just had it's 1st oil change. Wait a few hours for other more knowledgeable  members to respond. If Cruiserfied responds, do what he suggests.

Hy suggest every 80k, but to be safe I'd use 60k as the change point, if you can afford it. Auto's are expensive to fix and prevention is better than cure.

Hey Malibu,

I think Phil is on the right track, I would definately be getting the trans serviced as old oil will over heat easier.

Did your mechanic tell you the specific fault code he/she found? If we had that we could help even more. There may be a concern with the oil temp sensor and its reading high temp and throwing it into limp mode when there is no reason for it.

Certainly dont jump straight into an overhaul. And if money is tight you could look for a used gearbox if it comes to it.

In uk if from a garage they have an obligation under sales act and this would include a warranty with the car?
Is that the same where you are?

If so, take it back and get them to sort it for you

:welcum: Malibu, from a fellow Tasmanian. You can't blame Hyundai for the Getz shunt...  :whistler: :winker:

How does the gearbox perform when cold? Is there any delay when you select reverse gear? This could indicate more than just old oil (but I obviously hope this is not the case)

If you bought the SR private sale it will be hard to get any comeback, but as Lester says if bought from a dealer I would go and see them and tactfully make some noise about assisting with any repair or servicing costs. Good luck with it!  :fingers:

Thanks, bought it from a private seller so I understand that I don't have any come back with them. I have it booked in with an auto Trans place in a couple of days so will let you know what the outcome is.
it goes into reverse well with no delay and when cold changes fine so I will wait and see
cheers Malibu

Hi had the i30 Trans serviced. He said it was really good and that the sensor had failed. So after that repair it is running really well so I can now continue to love my car. Thanks for all the positive  reply's

Was it the temp sensor?

As a plus you now know when the auto was serviced and fluid replaced.

  • A woman drove me to drink and I didn't even have the decency to thank her..
