Hi guys n gals... quick question, which rear disc brake wind-back tool works on an i30 & might any such item also work on the Picanto rear disc brake set-up?

Cheers... Keith

Well it seems the Laser piston reset tool will do the job on the Picanto & i30 on the basis that it was sold as suitable to me by a KIA dealer who stock them & sell them for around £22 as opposed to £80 for the genuine KIA item which does the Picanto & C'eed.

Hope this helps others.

Maybe I should just have said "how do owners fit new brake pads into the rear brake caliper on their i30"?  :winker: And later also asked "does the same tool work on a Picanto"?

OK guys no worries... the tool I got has a reversible attachment to suit 2 sizes of caliper piston.

Well made, I just need to see if it works now!

Most rear brake pistons don't just push back in like on the front. They need to be wound back in. I don't know why the design is different but it is.

Yes, ta Surferdude, I knew I'd need a wind-back or re-set tool I just didnt know which one to buy, as none of the examples I viewed on 'tinterweb actually stated KIA / Hyundai use.

The reason the rears have to be wound back for pad replacement is down to the handbrake mechanism basically.

Here is a link showing the device, I got it for less (not from Halfords) as my daughter works in  a Kia dealership  & they stock them, as the genuine KIA item is £80 + V.A.T! :whistler:

dont they have a 'drum hand brake' in teh middle of the disk like most other cars??

or is it like an R31 skyline... where the hand brake operates the piston directly...

ive always used a 'G' clamp on the front and rear of most cars (besides the skyline with the 'self adjusting piston')

G clamp is fine for fronts, like you I have always used a chippy's G-clamp on front disc brakes.

I've yet to try the tool I bought, but I couldn't see any drum brake on the backside of the disc brakes on the rear of my i30 TBH. I'll investigate fully soon as poss, but I know Mrs Ffoxy's Picanto just has the handbrake operating on the rear disc & has 2 dimples in the piston to accomodate the re-wind tool. And the guys at the local KIA garage said the i30 / C'eed have the same arrangement as the Picanto just on a bigger scale.

The old G clamp works fine if the rear brakes don't incorporate a handbrake mechanism.

Many small cars with disc brake rears incorporate the handbrake mechanism in the caliper and have various methods of retracting the piston.
There is a guide HERE which may help
Using a G clamp can result in some very expensive repairs (replacement caliper)

On my Nissan Pulsar, I used a strip of metal as a large screwdriver and carefully screwed the piston into the caliper.

There's no record of a post being made by you Steve , and following your PM about it, check you're not using words (or combinations of words) that would upset our WAF security
