Hi there, I'm no car mechanic but don't mind having a go at the simpler diagnostic fix/replace tasks. Our 2009 i30's heater is something I just don't even know where to start with - all we are getting is cold (outside temperature) or cool air conditioned air inside the car. Nothing changes even after driving for over an hour with the heater dial tunred on to full.

If anyone could give some basic guidance for where I should start looking and to narrow down the source of problem, I'd be very grateful? (btw I've had a good rummage and search around the forums but could't see anything relevant).

Many thanks

Hi TBird1

Welcome to the forum.

1. Does the engine actually get hot..? The thermostat could be open constant, thus the engine never gets hot ( operating temperature )

2. When turning the cold/warm dial there is a cable/wire that connects to a valve in the engine compartment, just near the firewall, I think it is, that adjust the amount of hot water let into the cabin heater.
If this valve is defect, the warm water never gets to the cabin heater.
The cable/wire could also have jumped out of the fixture at the valve, thus not operating the valve when you turn the dial.

3. Same fault possibility with the cable/wire at the dial end.

4. The heating element in the cabin could be clogged, but if this issue have started from one day to another then you can rule this option out.

Welcome Tbird .. Not a common fault. Asterix used to be a VW service manager so he has an advantage over most of us with diagnosing faults  :winker:

Assuming you didn't get a 5 year warranty over there?

If you have no luck try PMing Member syecadelic as he works in a Hyundai Dealership somewhere in Ireland and is a very approachable guy  :goodjob:

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

Asterix, thank you also for the clear guidance . . .  the car is new to me from last week and has a full service history, so yes I believe (hope) the warranty will cover it, I'm actually taking it in to our local dealer http://www.cannonhyundai.co.uk/ next Tuesday - so fingers crossed!

Best regards,

TBird1  :goodjob:

Yeah the dealer will sort you out I'm sure.

One of our members, syecadelic, lives near that dealer and if I'm not mistaken works for them, from time to time, so do ask for Simon when you go :)

Feeling quite concerned now.

Having had the car in to our local dealership to check the heating issue, they have been extremely helpful in narrowing down the problem to a potential pipe blockage somewhere where they can feel warm flow in but cold flow out (or visa versa). Unfortunately they're making noises that due to a previous repair where the heater matrix was replaced (Oct 2012) with a non-Hyundai part that it is not likely to be something they would tackle under warranty. Also, I'm being told that to get at the area required is going to involve the removal of the dashboard requiring a full day of labour at £75+vat per hour. The previous repair was for the previous owner by a dealer who is located over 100 miles away so I don't think I'll have much swing going back to them  :scared:

Copy of engineers report attached.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

- Was the dealer 100 miles away a Hy dealer or a generic car dealer?

- How long have you owned the vehicle?

- Is the coolant in the expansion bottle clean or rusty coloured?

- Did you purchase the vehicle privately or from a dealer?
