Hey Guys,

I thought I'd just post a couple of pics of the OBDII port location in a Hyundai i30. Maybe you already know, but hopefully it helps someone!
So here you can see that I have my bluetooth OBD2 adapter in the port, just above the accelerator:

This is what it looks like:

As a sem-tech owner what can I do with this port?

Further to my post I've done a bit of reading about this and looked up Ebay for the connectors. Some exclude specific vehicles, non mention the i30, either petrol of diesel.

Does the diesel have this?

So, I don't know which device to buy.

And what software should I use? There are a few apps for the iPad which is what I'd use.

Did you remove some part of the under-dash to get that photo?

Mine is encapsulated in heavy foam, with a cutout for the port (see here):

And as for software, have a play with our search button (try "bluetooth dongle") ;)

This is the position in the 2012 i30. There is an easily removable fuse cover in the lower dash which exposes the fuses and OBD.

I doubt whether you could get the cover back on whilst there was a plug in the OBD – there is hardly any clearance between the plug and the hand moulding which protrudes from the cover. However, this moulding protrusion is dead in line with the OBD socket and it would not be rocket science to cut it away to leave a permanent and neat hole in the cover to access the OBD.

This is the one I used: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261020896247?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
It was the cheapest i could find, works well though.
I downloaded an android app called "torque" which works well with this adapter.

So the underside of your dashboard is bare?

Mine is enclosed within soundproofing material...

I have an iPhone. Anyone care to recommend an app for it? I'd be using it on the ipad, though, to make it easy to read.

I've recently looked into this and it appears as if the cheapy bluetooth adapters won't work with an iOS device. Apparently, the protocol for data transfer over Bluetooth (some form of serial format) is not supported by Apple's bluetooth implementation. There are more expensive adapters that generate their own WiFI network and these are the ones you need if you have an iOS device. From memory the Apps to interface with them are also more expensive than something like the Torque App (~AUS$5) on Android systems.

Bye Jeff.

the under side of the dash on both my i30s is the same as in wilki's pic.     Korean built cars must be different to the Czech built ones.

Mine is the Premium model (top of the range, at the time) and there's all manner of soundproofing material around that area.

I used to think that too Steve, but so many differences have been posted over the past 4/5 years that I'm guessing the Korean factory knew exactly what British roads/motorways are like, so added extra padding everywhere  :undecided:

In this month's Royal Auto, the magazine for the Royal Auto Club of Victoria, there is an article on a trial that they are conducting. They want to use selected vehicles with OBD to survey vehicle usage using an iPhone app.

http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/Internet/Primary/my%20car/RACV%20Connected%20Vehicle%201

Unfortunately no Hyundai models are "compatible". But it appears that its app will work with the supplied OBD2 module.

Not a bad money spinner - set up a trial and get "volunteers" to pay for it...

Apart from the fact we don't have an iphone, live in the wrong state and neither of our cars are compatible ... I might have been interested in that (Like you say a bit cheeky about the costs although I suppose it is to cover the cost of the dongle)  :whistler:

I'm having second thoughts about it. I just had a quick glance at a paper written by the NTC about telematics and how it can be used in a regulatory manner.

We hear about how they'd like to track our movements, what speeds we do and so on and have it fed live back to say, Vicroads or Victoria Police (or whatever state/country you're in) via mobile phone link, then have fines automatically sent out.

Now, being a conspiracy theorist and naturally paranoid, I'd hate to think that a motorists' representative body would be helping authorities trial such a system...

We drive on the right-hand side, so it looks a tad different to what was posted before.  In my 2011 i30 CW the OBD-II port is to the left of steering wheel, above the clutch pedal - just as if the photo, which was attached to the first post, was mirrored (But leave pedals intact!).
