UK users regarding headlights

Hi,  does anyone know where to apply the black tape on the headlight glass,
to take out the high beam for driving in europe,
it was marked on the lense on my yaris?

I don't think it's marked on the i30 but the shadow mask in the projector lenses give such clear cut lines it should make it easy to mask the "high triangles" above the horizontal cut-off.

As a double check I think If you park so the headlight bulbs are 3m away from a light coloured wall then with no driver in the car I think your should be masking the two triangles that extend above 62.8cm high on the wall.

The i30 will really need it, as those triangles are really bright compared to a lot of cars with more traditional reflectors.

Please explain..? Never heard of this before?

Can you just not use the high beam when you are over on the "mainland"

No, this is the dipped/low beam we are talking about. The high beam doesnt need changing. This is because the (dipped, low) healight beam is shaped like this:

And when you drive on the wrong side (on the right) the high sided triangles of light that normally light up the roadside signs are instead blinding on coming drivers.

The little black masks we apply temporarily to the outside of the lights (I use insulation tape) block out the high bits. Without these you risk being stopped and fined by the french police too.

Main beam doesn't need altering as with main on too the light pattern looks kind of like this:

With the main beam being the X's. You'd always turn these off in the face of oncoming traffic which ever side you were driving on anyway.

Well explained Lorian,
i usually use black duck tape or insulating tape too,
but these lights have no markings on the lenses.
my motorbike has Lhd headlights, and to pass the M.O.T. every year i put tape on.
they do sell stick on deflectors, but they cover the whole lense and you loose a lot of light,
i suppose as a last resort i will do as you suggest an point the car to the wall and experiment.

So you would have to be careful in OZ or UK importing lights from Europe or USA for example to get them the right way around...

And surfer, i live close to the ferry terminal and from what i see,
of all the Europeans  coming in to the UK 99% don't bother,
probably because 99% of our police don't speak any other language,
and its too much hastle!

on my motorbike i have benn stopped a few times and the police dont notice
my lights are wrong and my speedometer is in kilometres not miles per hour.

in Spain the guardia civil  (military type police) are bast***ds they just fine you on the spot
if you have wrong lights,or no 1st aid kit, fluorescent jackets,warning triangles,spare bulbs,
all your documents inc vehicle registration documents,even the bank receipt for payment of your insurance,
handy if someone steals your car, they have all your papers too
that's why i posted the original post, my old Yaris had sections on the lens easily identified to put tape on :cool:

Yes lights could be very problematic. Not sure if they do the same when coming to the uk, but they should. Not many would make it to where's I live.

Seriously though, almost everything I see about the EU suggests the Europeans abuse/ adjudicate the system to suit themselves whilst the British adhere to all the rules to their country's detriment.
To clarify, I'm talking about goverment officialdom, not the general populace.

I would suiggest you have a chat with your dealer or even contact CS at HY UK HQ.

I would expect there is a kit or a bulletin covering this.

I'm willing to bet the kit will be more than a tenner though, and will only be a two templates and a couple of stickers. Black insulation tape will work fine.

When it gets dark later if I'm still awake I'll go make some templates.

But you can buy from the AA HERE or Halfords etc

Or if you look on eBay and search: Headlamp converters

I bought a set of Eurolites on the ferry when I came over to the UK but I like the idea of duck tape much cheaper and easier to apply and remove

Hola Mike, as the lenses are plastic i would use insulating tape, as the glue on duck tape would be a bit*h to get off,
OK on glass headlights as you can use a razor blade,  but would scratch plastic.
i have seen the eurolites on eBay, but i think as they refract the light through the plastic film,
you would lose a lot.
