What kind of terrain are we talking about? Passengers? Ambient temperature?

You haven't said where you are...

Most of my trips are two or three miles and the engine is just warming up by the time I get to my destination - on these I get 29-30.

The economy gets better with longer runs, up to about 45 or so. So similar to your figures.

I don't think it is great really, but I don't do many miles so doesn't bother me.

Motorways at 80+ see it drop to 30 again.

I think the main problem with the engine is that it's to small for such a big car a turbo charger may have helped with this engine

That would have helped performance, but not economy. Purchase price would then have been more than the 1.6 and more to go wrong!

The 1.4 Turbo Cruze can be quite thirsty!

Well a smaller engine with a turbo charger like a 1.0 or 1.2 would have helped I would have thought as ford make very good smaller engined cars with a turbo charger and can get the economy into the mid 60 s . Thanks for replying

Yes, one of our member (Keith) from the UK has a 1.0 Turbo ford now but admits it is not that economical (but they are a nice little motor)  :goodjob:

I've have read that in magazines . Suppose there not a perfect option for economy .

Seems Diesel or Hybrid are the 2 best options (still) for performance with economy...

This is why the speed limit in the UK is 70 nothing to do with road safety as current gov/police would have you believe it's to reduce pollution was brought in in the 1950s because of heavy smog before that you could go as fast as you wanted on a motorway. (P.S. Before anyone complains I am purely talking motorway speeds here and not 30s 40s etc)
