Not a bad idea if your alloys Protrude (ours don't) Not sure about the Coloured ones though

Why is it that the price is proportional to the protection offered. There's about 2 bucks worth of material, so I,d pay $5.00 per wheel

With the price of replacement factory alloys they are still cost effective ... Bit of a rigmorole to fit though, you wouldn't fit them to tyres due for replacement soon (would you)

I had these on my Kia Ceed.  They're excellent - really tough and work extremely well.  See full details here.

I forgot to add, mine AlloyGators were the original design ones.   They now have a different profile and a clip system, which probably makes them easier to fit.
