I'm an Aussie just moved to Lake Constance on the Swiss, Austrian, German border.
Needed a new car for the Mrs and I to be able to fit in visitors with luggage, and economical enough to take road trips around the continent.
Jan '08 1.6 CDRi (85kW version) hatch fitted the bill just lovely. We pick it up Monday afternoon. No frills to this car - we had to negotiate to get the dealer to throw in (Hyundai in house at least) central locking! But ABS and ESP which is important for us who are new to driving on snow.

I'm interested to look into these easy tuning mods that seem to be explicitly chip tunings. What do they actually do and what are the side effects? To forums!

So cheers, see you around.

A big welcome Tim.. That model should indeed fit the bill.. :goodjob: :D

Until someone answers your question about the chip tuning (I didn't tweak mine) feel free to use the search function as lots of threads and discussions on here about to pros and cons (A tuning box seems to be one of the most cost effective and flexible options from the look of it)

Hey all,

Thanks for the warm greetings!

Yeah first thing I learned when shopping for one was the different specs around the world. For instance, the lowest spec i30 here doesn't come with Aircon, no ESP, no electric mirrors, and electric windows on the front only. But still the full complement of airbags from what I can tell.
Also, before (March?) 2010 they only had a 3 year factory warranty, only the newest ones come with 5 years now.

But in the land of Golfs and Focuses, I was pleasantly surprised at how popular the i30 is and how much it holds its value. We were just lucky to land one with the higher power (85kW) 1.6 diesel, aircon, and ESP at a price within our range.
The Germans seem to really respect a company that offers such an extensive (unlimited kms) warranty to back themselves.

Sheesh some epic threads on tuning options and I'm not through reading them all yet.
As an avionics systems engineer it offends my professional sensibilities to be playing with only parts (eg tuning box; hacking config tables of the ECU) of a system without fully understanding the impacts on the rest of the complete system. But on the flip side as a keen tweaker if offends my other sensibilities to not push the boundaries at least a little bit. It's not like my personal i30 is going to drop out of the sky and kill hundreds of people

And yeah it's a bewdiful part of the world here, can't wait to see it in summer. And much less underwater than friends and family back home - hi to anyone else from flooded Queensland!

Cheers all

Hi from the Sunshine Coat in Queensland Tim.
Fortunately the S.C. is not a one of the extensively
flooded sections of Qld, but still a very soggy part.

Hello and welcome Tim  :).

Just a cheeky but serious question ! Tim, How much cheaper is a top of the range Hyundai i30 complete with the most wanted extras compared to the popular 130 BMW ?

Cheers .

Interesting question.
From the Hyundai website, the 85kW diesel Comfort (middle) model is €20,090
http://www.hyundai.de/downloads/prospekt/i30_modellprospekt.pdf

From the BMW website, the 85kW diesel 116d model is €24,950
http://www.bmw.de/de/de/newvehicles/_shared/pdf/pricelist/1_SH_pricelist.pdf?download=true

So it's 125% the cost of the i30 new. Second hand the difference is even greater, so for me it was a no brainer to go for the Hyundai. Controversial decision when living in Southern Germany, but ah well you get that  :)

Thanks for that info Tim ......... interesting  :) I think here it would be about 200% at least or perhaps it sounds better to say you could almost buy 2 i30 SLXs (middle of range) for the price of the BMW.
Enjoy your car .... Cheers  :goodjob:.

Thanks for that bit of info babis  :goodjob: 10,000 euro's is a lot of money difference, I think that's about $12,000 Aussie dollars, I'm surprice that the base model BMW doesn't have alloys yukko  :). I'm not a diesel flag flyer .... petrol does me  :D .

Cheers     ................... Sorry to have hijacked your thread Tim by this post  :-[ :).
