When I picked Fergie up tonight the young fella insisted on going through each item with me. He started at the "tyre tread" report but I'd started looking from the bottom, where I noticed

Quote
10/40w S/SYNTH

I told him they'd used the wrong oil, and showed him my previous invoice from last year.

Oops!

He checked on the system and confirmed they'd cocked up. They took the car back in and changed it all over, including a new filter, then reprinted my invoice.

See service cost in next post.

Total £224.07 equating to AU$453

It was also a 25000 mile service, not as shown above

Well spotted and full marks to them for owning up straight away but it should not have HAPPENED!!!!

It just shows that they probably didn't check the service requirements for your model and just assumed it was a run of the mill Hy.

I wonder what grade of technician undertook the work and whether they employ a "supervisor" to check etc.  Why not drop an email to your mate Tony giving feedback on your service.

I'm sure HY UK would use using the incorrect oil as a get out of jail card and refuse any remidial work should there be problem with the engine due to using the wrong oil.

Again, well spotted before you left the forecourt and caused "damage" to Fergie.

That's what I was quoted when I put mine in in September but I'll only have about 15k

Can't even get that right!

Did you mention that?

Thanks for the comments eye30.

I didn't get an answer to my "how did this happen?", just a shrug of the shoulders. That attitude in itself will make me think again about using this franchise in the future. Also, regarding the email to Tony, I have considered that option, especially seeing the guy said they'd paid for the second filter and oil disposal themselves... like I would have paid it myself

In fact, as I type this, I'm forming in my mind an email to send to Hyundai MCUK regarding the fact that they have road-tested my Fergie with the wrong oil.

In fact, I'm getting rather angry now I've just remembered the guy said "Shall we settle up now. There's no additional cost for the rework"

He spotted that himself as he swivelled the invoice round to show me. Said it was computer generated and unnatural for this model to be on a 12.5K service interval. That, I can believe, as I think yours is on a 10K interval, so I let that one pass

What grade is the Solaris "Particulate Grade oil"?

Wonder if it accords to C3?

Looked it up on google but no wiser .........  I think you should look into this.

Shambles,

Do you have a full size spare tyre?

It's 17" but not an alloy, just a "TEMP" as noted in the tread report

It's refined by ELF and is for particulate diesels :)

I split this from bdennis' thread as it was wandering a little (my fault). May help other UK owners nearing their service interval :)

Have you gents ever seen that old Castrol oil ad "Oil's ant Oil's"? i think our Recall boy was one of the star's in that ad
Steve i'm wondering why here in Australia we have 13
15,000kilometer service intervals with 7,500 op (for extream conditions like idleing where trip does not log time motor is runing ).
STEVE 25,000MILE IS 40,000k we would have intervals of 15,30,45.
by the way my Service guy use's ELF lubricant's.

The 20,000 service is definitely in the system, I had to correct my dealer when I arranged mine, he said to me 10,000 or 12 months and I had to point out that the service booklet had been altered to 12,500 or 12 months, although I believe that earlier models had the 10,000 requirement.

A 12,500 mile interval is 20,000Km.  We, in Oz, have 15,000Km service intervals with an optional intermediate oil change.  Are you also doing an intermediate OC at 6,250 miles (10,000Km)?

The Elf link only showed two of the lows SAPS oils (suitable for "afterburners") were actually C3 rated.  If the one you got wasn't C3 (LLX) then this might be a warranty issue if you have an engine/turbo problem.  Which one did you get?  LSX looks to be the best of the three there.

The oil used would directly influence my decision on OCI although these Elf oils do say they are good for the distance.  I hate to wonder what the first lot was and how it would be feeling after 12,500 miles. In any case it sounded unnecessarily heavy for your climate.

I doubt any production changes brought about the increase in Service Interval.  Running costs would be well considered by fleet owners/lease/hire companies and this can be a selling point.

WRT to damaging anything with the wrong oil used for the road test:  I would expect (without knowing) that the lack of C3 spec would really only affect the DPF after an extended period.

What I would be concerned about, as you said, is that if the dealer can't put the right oil in then I'd question what else they might stuff up.  I'd find another for next time.

If it were me I wouldn't panic.. I'd book it for late June which by the look of it will be well inside the 12.5k..

How does the oil level and quality look (it will be very black but is it still nice and slimy...and not gritty)?

My take would be this:  If you have services done every 11 months when you reach about 10k (like now) instead of waiting until 12 months has expired, you will have done one extra service in 12 years time.

Now, if you were to buy your car second-hand some years up the track would you rather see services done by the book, as printed or have the owner say "but they changed it after I bought it"?

For my 1.6 crdi the service book shows every 12 months or every 10,000 miles which ever comes first.

And for my 1.6 crdi bought in March 09. service intervals are 12 months or 12500 miles (whatever come sooner) with no intermediate services. Amazing the different requirements from country to country.

And a very useful warning about checking the oil used.

seems odd to have difference for the same model or is it?

Hey eye what's this ps? like 115ps? i think ours is 88KW 255nm
some parts of AU they get condensation it can add water to oil  when you leave them standing a lot, but here in Sydney we don't seem to have that problem. you might get that in GB?
weather & driving conditions and so on would effect service intervals, its cool and wet here now.
cheers

In Uk they have released a low compression crdi which is 88kw = 90ps.

I'll check HY UK web site later when I get home from work
