It's certainly not worth driving around, but it's worth a check on http://www.petrolprices.com/ before going to buy. I guess there are similar sites for other countries.

I get weekly emails from them.

Trouble is as you say, to save 1p you may need to travel out of your way which will cost more than what you save.

But it's handy to know of cheaper local places especially if you'll be in that area when you need to top up.
