My EL Falcon was killed by a timing chain going the day after I signed to buy the I30...

It knew...

Everyone told me how rare it was. Surprisingly it was no comfort at all.....

Considering that's what I traded for the Hy, & yes it sounded like a chaffcutter, strangely, I never made the connection. They had balancing shafts, didn't know the timing chain drove them though. I always knew I  wasn't going to be the one to fix it.

surferdude, yes the early sigma's and a lot of the early datsuns and nissans,I have changed many a chain the way Keith mentioned but one hugh drawback with this method,if the auto tensioner was screwed, putting the new chain in was a bit of a waste as it would still have chain slap, cars were cheap those days so we just run em till they stopped and put up with the rattle.

Yeah. I just pulled the cover off my Datto rally cars and replaced everything. That meant they'd outlast the rest of the car. :whistler:

I've actually never heard of anyone having any requirement to replace a chain. Were they a problem in the alfa's. Were they a duplex chain or single.
Gee Phil. Don't you remember the timing chains in the original Sigmas. They were noisy as all hell after about 20,000 miles and needed to be replaced in almost every case.

Bugger me Sigma theirs a name I hoped I'd never hear again  and the old Colt, the 180B and a lot of the very early Mazda's,thank gord technology has gotten better LOL

Did you know that the difference between a 180B and a 200B is that the 200B had 20 more mistakes?

Just sayin'

I had a really tatty Auto 180B as a 2nd car for a short period (It drove really well but I had to keep topping it up with really thick BP oil .. any other oil would go through it like petrol)

My mate won the Qld Rally Championship in a 120y.
Cut the firewall, fitted a 2litre engine, back about 8". Five speed box, shortened tailshaft etc etc etc.
Now THAT was a rocketship.
Should've seen what he did with the 1200 sedan he had before it. That was less modified but he still managed 7th outright against all the internationals in the heyday of the Southern Cross International Rally run over 4 nights out of Port Macquarie.
These days he's MCA Suspension.

I wouldn't have liked to be in his highly modified 120Y in a prang  :sweating:

Anyhoo  :backontopic: as some may have read somewhere,I got Cyril his 60,000 k service on Friday, save a shite load of diniro but supplying all my own crappolla, but my questions is(well not just yet)they had to put a new brake switch in,they say that they replace at least two a week, all in Hyundai's so Hyundai has not yet sourced a decent supplier of brake switches onviously, anyhoo the question is does anyone else have the problem of every time they take their car into a dealership,it always seems to come back with some wierd rattle or squeak in the dash board, hopefully I have found mine yesterday

I don't go to the dealer but have the rattle in the dash, so if you can let me in on how to stop it I would be much obliged.

As an aside, I saw a 120y in a head on with a Nissan Patrol.....surprisingly old mate lived, still he would have needed a heap of rehab to walk again because his legs were a mess.

Beerman
Rattles and squeaks can be just about anything,I knew they had to take the lower dash panel out when they did the switch and having overheard the Mech explain he had trouble with that because of all the extra Acc wiring and added cruise control,it was a procass of elimination, as mine was more of a squeak/rattle I knew it had to be something to do with the foam packing in the under dash panel, sure enugh when I opened the fuse panel I could see the light sensor cable for the cruise control jammed between the fowm packing and the actual dash fixing panel, haven't tested it but I think the noise has gone,as mine came in at speeds over 80kph on the open road.
The first rattle I did have or though I had in Cyril was actually my keys swinging in the ignition, because I had added extra keys to my keyring

That's pretty much going to be the result where any small car is involved with a Nissan Patrol sized vehicle.
