So, the message seems to be that the red dots aren't worth the red paper they come from.,,,,,,,,,,,.................and the million £ or $ question is.............Do they serve a purpose once the tyre has been removed/reseated on its rim as the wheel will require balancing due to it being  moved even if they do manage to line up the dots.

Last time i had tyres balance the machine told the operative where to place the weights.
They (the balance machines) have been doing that for 40 years.

But the operator still has to apply them accurately. And if the machine (most work in 5 gram increments) says 45 grams, it may be 42/3 or 47/8 which is needed. So putting on a 45 gram weight may give you a slight reading of 5 or 10 grams, some degrees off to one side.  The good operator knows to try a few options. Like try a 35 gram weight in the same spot. Or move the existing weight marginally (maybe as little as a centimeter) to the side. In addition, depending on knowledge and experience with the particular car model, wheel and or tyre combination and condition of the car's suspension and rims, the operator may know whether or not a difference of a few grams will cause a problem.

I saw a demonstration many years ago by a German specialist who balanced up a wheel and tyre assembly, zeroing it out with the fine tune option. He then deflated the tyre and wedged a normal sized business card between the bead of the tyre and the rim. The assembly then needed 10 grams weight on both the inside and outside rims (not in line with one another) to offset it.. This was not just because of the weight of the card but the slight difference in the "seating" of the bead against the rim.

I use the white background (curve) on which yellow font is unreadable................................  :blubber:

Until the quote button is used when it shows as black in the reply box.

...but I don't always want to reply...

It is difficult to comprehend how a 0.35mm displacement of a very short section of bead would affect wheel balance to the extent  given.
But what was the point of the card trick as the tyre needed deflating, the bead needed breaking  again to remove the card  and tyre re-inflating so it was back to the original position as far as balance went.
As my last sentence said, it demonstrated how much effect on tyre balance is caused by the tyre's beads not seating correctly - as often happens if the rim is not clean, or simply th f itter doesn't check to se that the tyre has come up evenly all round the rim.
Another issue can be caused by even a small amount of mud adhering to the inside of the wheel and not cleaned off before balancing. Then later, when it is removed by washing, the tyre is out of balance.

Did the fitter put them on or on from the factory?

The yellow dots are normally marking the lightest spot on the tyre and are more prevalent on tyres released for sale in the aftermarket. They should be fitted nearest to the valve which is adding (minimal admittedly) weight to the rim.
The red dots represent high spots and are more useful in the factory fitted adjacent to the matching dots (marking the low spots) on the rims.
If a tyre has neither on it the it hasn't been checked in the factory for radial run out or balance. Generally, only a random selection of tyres are checked in the factory for these things.

They are after market. There is a red dot at about 90 Deg from memory, but the yellow on both, is at the valve.

So I wonder why the fitter didn't place the red dot where he ended up placing the yellow dot?

I follow the theory but  again it is difficult to comprehend how the infinitesimal weight of a visiting card and a 0.35mm displacement of a very short section of bead would affect wheel balance to the extent  given.  Would any commercial wheel balancer operate to the degree of detecting the difference with and without the card?

I am intrigued  by ".......... balanced up a wheel and tyre assembly, zeroing it out with the fine tune option".  I've looked at several wheel  balancer web sites and none mention this feature.  The best seem to work to a tolerance of 0.05 oz (1.4 gm)

loads of text here not sure if anyone said it but to remove the dots use a " water gun "  close on the tire and it will dissapear, also on the rim use a heat gun or a hair dryer and just peel it off I think =)
