Not being an expert on maths, or anything else for that matter, out of our 3K+ members is there anyone out there who would like to explain the relationship between the randomness of numbers and the statistical frequency patterns of numbers that do come up more frequently than others.

Before anyone else says it, I know that the selections are truly random, every time and that mathematical patterning can not influence the outcome, but is there any value at all in knowing which numbers have been drawn more often and the pattern of the number of draws between each number's selection.
I'm not a mathematical genius either but regarding the randomness of some numbers coming up more often I think it's just that the random sample hasn't run long enough to even out. Might take a couple of hundred years.

^-- reference the above, just after the UK National Lottery was set up in Nov 1994 I remember reading the summary of a thesis written by a professor of statistical science, who mused that selecting random numbers to be entered into a random draw would yield better matches over time.

Shame he didn't say how long that 'time' would be, nor how much it would cost to get to those averages.

Reminds me of the story of the young woman who REALLY wanted to win the lottery.
So she started one  Friday night when she went to bed she prayed, "Please God. Let me win the lottery tomorrow night.
No result.
Next week, same prayer.
Same result.
Week three. Same prayer, plus a special plea about how good a life she'd lead if she won.

From above boomed this great deep voice, "Help me out here. BUY A TICKET!!!!!!!!!!!"

I like it when people reckon they nearly won the Lottery because their neighbour did  :snigger:

 How close can you get?
I've nearly won it many times - only been six (6) numbers short.
