    Change to car tax rules will see only zero-emission new cars pay nothing at all

    All new cars above this will pay a flat £140 per year after the first 12 months

    Cars costing more than £40,000 will be hammered with extra £310 a year cost

    Changes only affect brand new cars, for others existing system remains

The nero isn't Zero emission.  It is a hybrid not a full EV. So the 140 p/a is what Alan was already aware of. Please pay attention in class Lester...

You owe Lester a grovelling humble and sincere apology. The new rules specify clearly that they only apply to cars registered after 1st April 2017.

Cars registered before that date will retain their current tax rating.

The Niro 2 under current rules emits 88 units of CO2 and is zero rated for road tax. Hence I will not be paying road tax for the life of the vehicle. 

This assumes that I get the car before 1st April - it is still on a Hyundai Glovis car carrier - possibly Glovis Solomon for those who monitor marine traffic - together with up to 6,499 other cars. The ship has a gross weight of 72,000 tons and can cruise at about 20 knots. 

It is currently cruising from Sri Lanka to a southern port in Jordan - from where it is expected to travel to Suez and into the Med. Sea

But, but.. that is what I was intimating. You already said if it wasn't delivered before 1st april you didn't want it. The way I read Lesters post was that he thought you wouldn't now worry about the cut off because he was thinking the Niro was a nil emissions vehicle...

Why are eletric vehicles called Zero emission?

Seems to me that unless the power is being made via renewable sources that the emissions are mearly being transferred to where the coal fired power plant is based.

Agree, but the power plant's are mostly not placed in the city centre where the pollution is the big killer. In that sense it's Zero Emission.  :mrgreen:

Furthermore - a typical power plant may chuck out a lot of Co2 and other pollutants - but per Kw of electricity generated they are far more efficient than an internal combustion engine.

If you could wave a magic wand and overnight all vehicles were battery or fuel cell powered - pollution levels would fall dramatically (given there was enough generating capacity to serve them of course - which would require a second wave of the wand)

On the same page, Alan. I've always been a big fan of electric vehicles, not for some mistaken notion of zero emissions, but for the fact that the problem is indeed shifted to one far more efficient focal point where something genuinely sweeping can be done, like go nuclear, solar, wave, geothermal, etc. :victory:

I think you're all being overly critical.  Surely the term zero emissions only refers to the vehicle's operation not its manufacture.

Oy !! - count me out. I confined my remarks to the car emissions.

I remember reading an article a few years ago that we would never be able to have electric cars for everyone - because there was not enough copper on the earth to make all the motors and wiring.  I was working in the aluminium industry at the time - which was chuffed at the suggestion - because aluminium can be used in wiring and motors
