Take a look at this video and then imagine your vehicle in the same situation. What is the correct thing to do

Hope it burns.....

That looks expensive......

I saw a Kia do that once.....there is a truckload of smoke...thought it was on fire.

I read that once a diesel engine runs away like that there is nothing that can be done until it detonates. I wouldn't know myself but I've seen a BMW in similar distress on you tube and basically it kept going until it exploded.

Maybe the correct answer is call for roadside assistance and stay upwind.

Can anyone confirm that in the very unlikely event that this should happen, simply turning the key to off, WILL STOP THE ENGINE.

Not necessarily - if a diesel runs away using engine oil vapour you need to starve it of air (not easy) or stall it by putting it into top gear and letting the clutch in with the brake hard on.  Not sure how effective that is with an auto box though?

If it were me and the car was still under warranty I would pull over in neutral and film the event. I would not want to re-use an engine that has run away in case any damage not apparent at the time raises its ugly head later.

If you ever suffer the run away deisel, get to know where your fuel pump is so you can manually shut off the fuel, even simpler way,is know how to quickly remove the air cleaner box lid and filter and stuff your shirt pants or rag if you carry one in the car, straight over the air intake to starve it of air, they soon stall,it's not a fun thing to have happen in a truck I can tell ya,I've only had it happen once that was enough

I am under the impression that with a modern diesel having common rail injection a fuel powered runaway with the key OFF is almost unknown.  It is nearly always the result of turbo lube oil  leakage or engine oil vapour. It can be potent stuff for a minute or two and wreck an engine.

Quick way - stall the engine as I described.

Brave way - remove filter box etc and stuff your pants in the air intake.

I saw a new Commodore make that once smoke the other month. It's engine hadn't so much run away as caught fire.

I think I prefer that, at least there is no argument with insurance.....

But aren't ALL our Diesels, fitted with the Air Cutoff Solenoid and if so, will it actually stop the engine.

if an air cut-off solenoid is fitted and if it does not stick open for any reason - then yes - it will stop the engine.

It is only fairly recently that VW Group and Peugeot have fitted such devices - I'm not sure whether the i30 has one but assume so.

Whatever happened to the tried and tested trick of shoving a potato in the exhaust pipe?

I mean, doesn't everyone carry a crisp device with them?

I thought we carried those to put down our Speedos whilst at the beach?  :undecided:

Simple.... Into top gear if its a manual, on with hand brake & footbrake and stall it dead! More awkward with an auto..... So I agree with Alan!

That may do the trick, but it's not guaranteed that the clutch will survive from it. Otherwise you will have not only a wrecked engine, but a wrecked clutch as well!  :undecided:

How about first getting moving and then stalling the engine by brakes when the clutch is not slipping? Anyway, there's not much time to save a runaway engine from complete destruction. If not blowing up from over-revving, it will finally seize from lack of lubrication in few minutes.

Yeah it's a hypothetical question and I'm reluctant to split hairs but stalling a diesel on the clutch is exactly that whether moving or stationary, just stall the mutha hucker regardless. A clutch costs less than a full engine!

You can try crimp the intake pipe if you can find a squishy section. Otherwise in top gear and clutch out seems to be the general consensus. Its not just turbo seals that csuse it either. Pcv can recirculate oil through the engine as well (common in older diesel golfs. Don't quote me but I think some of the newer diesel may run some form of throttle body in conjunction with a blow off valve to release boost pressure. I can only assume the anti run away valve is a closing throttle body design. Again I may well be wrong.
