I noticed that the 2011 i30 was not much different to the previous model - a new nose and a bit of extra trim stuck on the sides but otherwise it looked much the same inside and out.

By contrast, the 2011 Kia C'eed seems to have been much more extensively updated (new steering wheel, dash etc).

I wondered if anyone knew if the i30 was set to be given a more thorough facelift at some point in the forseeable future?

"next year" probably. They have a prototype they've been seen driving (see news section). actual introduction dates will vary by country.
