Hi Guys,

For those with diesel i30 (GD vers. preferred), I'm wondering if it's necessary to do the 6 month or 7,500km service if I do a lot of inner city drives (currently sitting at 8600km and bought since 5 months ago)? Or should I let the engine oil run-in little bit longer cos it's the special running in oil? I'm just wondering if it's wise to stick to what the manual says or has anyone experienced differently if they let the oil rn in bit longer.

I was unaware that there is a "running in" oil.

The diesel engine's biggest drawback is the EGR valve. This valve enables the engine to draw in exhaust gasses for anti pollution purposes. Theses gasses are dirty and contain particulates which contaminate oil. There are many users who change oil frequently for this reason. Your choice really.  :neutral:

My 2007 CRDi had its first oil change at 7,155 klms.  I don't know if that was necessary or not, but I didn't like the idea of a first oil change at 15,000.

+1 I did my 7500 km service about a month ago.

this service doesn't need to be done at Hyundai though, i got it done by my trusted mechanic, or you can do it yourself, but make sure you get the right spec oil as listed in the book, to keep your warranty, no idea how they'd know though.

The only place in my town to get oil of that spec was from Hyundai, but it was reasonably priced for synthetic oil, if you look past the fact I had to buy 10L of oil, as the car takes 5.3L.

On my last (FD) i30 I had the engine oil changed at 7500 km to get rid of the original oil and replace it with some new.

With my new one I intend to do the same and in fact, my dealership said to me when I picked up the car that they highly recommend the 7500 km service to get rid of the run-in oil and then 15,000 kms, and thereafter every 15,000 kms.

I'll be getting it done.

Thanks all for the replies! Just got the service booked in, i'll just do it at the dealer for my peace of mind and other things as well. Shouldn't cost alot extra right?

I booked my i30 in today for its 7500 km service, in two and a half weeks' time.
It should have done about 7500 kms by then.
I picked it up on November 30th and I've done 5,000 kms.
I considered going back to the dealership as I think they are using the same oil..?    :undecided:
Not totally convinced. They just told me it was 5-40 Shell Helix.
I use the Shell Helix Ultra so maybe it is the same.
Anyway, with fixed price servicing at $280+ I decided to take it to my trusted mechanical workshop because I'm hoping it will be about half that price. I supply my own oil.

I'm with you rustynutz, spec oil can be bought anywhere,no need to by ten litres either you can buy it in 1,4,5,6,an 10 ltr bottles,mind you buying it in smaller bottles is more expensive.

first I have heard Hyundai using running in oil,but hey some may,as for someone has said,deisels in general for various reasons are fairly dirty internal running engines,you don't have to get a dealer to change your oils and filter at the intermidiate service(it is important to get an accredited mechanic to do the required services)with a 17mm ringspanner,a 28mm socket,rachet and some common sense,the intermediate services are very easily done yourself(max 1 hour if you only let the sump drain for 30 mins,I leave mine drain over night),also of you are mechanically inclined all the other routine checks can also be done by yourself.

we have two FD I30's(same motor as the GD) just over twelve months old, both done almost 55000 K's and only once did I let one go over the 7500 K mark to the full 15000 K's between services and when I seen the oil and filter,never again.

Earlier Deisel trucks(even petrol cars) we had,always did oil and filter ever 5000 k's,so 7500 K's is a bonus for me,but those days we never had the quality full syn oil we do now,not any you could afford.

Just for interest,Hyundai does not in fact have their own specialised oil, they in fact do buy good quality Full Syn oil from whoever gives them the best deal,whether that be Penrite,Castrol,Fusch's or who ever

The book states that the oil must be of specification 'ACEA B4'. From supercheap, repco and the like I could only find ACEA B3 spec, including shell helix.

Then when I went to Hyundai to buy the filter, the parts guy also said to me to (without me asking) make sure I find an oil that is of that spec B4 to keep your warranty.

The oil I used was lubrimaxx 'Euro Premium' Fully Synthetic 5W-40. The viscosity is slightly off what was in the book, but that's what the dealer recommends. ~$60 for 5litres

The 5W30 & 0W40 are ACEA B4 oils and are definitely suitable for the i30 diesel.

That lubrimaxx 'Euro Premium' Fully Synthetic 5W-40 oil is suitable for engines with catalytic converters as well so may not be the most suitable oil for our diesel here in OZ.

Our resident "oil man", pip, might be able to enlighten us further though...  :undecided:

I didn't see those oils, which is handy to know. I scoured two shops for anything spec B4 and found nothing, keeping in mind I don't live in a major city or anything...

I have no idea what the spec is apart from a number.

I am basically just putting in it what the Hyundai service blokes say to, it's what they use on their scheduled services. I would hate to have my warranty voided over something as trivial as an oil specification.

I buy the fully synthetic Shell Helix Ultra (NOT the extra). That meets the B4 criteria and can be bought at Supercheap but it's usually not very super cheap, around the $63 mark for 5 litres.

There is no need to use C3/4 oil in Oz. However that's what the exact same engine uses in EU so it can't be bad and even might reduce EGR contamination because of the lower soot. Dealers might also use it as a "universal oil" but I'd be pointing out that Cx oil is not B4 if you aren't convinced that Cx is as good as B4! I'm not.

A5/B5 AFAIK is not recommended for any of our engines, neither petrol nor diesel so don't use it - it is designed for better economy and among other measures does this by being slightly thinner. I'm sure oil can be too thin or at least thinner than optimum.

A4/B4 (petrol/diesel) is designed with neither economy nor exhaust filters in mind and as such IMO is the best and most rugged oil designed presumably with lubrication in mind. I'm sure that is the reason B4 is specified by Hy for the Oz diesel which has no special requirements other than lubrication.

Which B4 (or Cx) is "best" is probably academic and any will do. Those mentioned (which of course are all B4), with the exception of the Castrol 5w30, would be on my short list. It's not that the 5w30 is bad mind you but it is more cheaply made (and purchased). I use it in my wife's Getz which I believe has much more modest needs. There is no red-hot turbo for a start.

no new to buy the 300ml extra you need to bring the oil up to the line, I get mine at Cannington store, but all the st6ores have the same prices, but they do not carry the filters for the later engines R2695P's didn't ask if they had the R2655P's for the earlier motors.

Thanks Rick, I appreciate that.
I'll give it some thought. Once I start with one oil I prefer to stick with it for the life of the car and having used the Shell in "April" she was running better than new when I sold her at 136+k so may stick with it.
But I must say that the 6 litre container appeals.
BPT Performance where I've taken a couple of my high performance Fords use and swear by Penrite oils.

This subject always ends up confusing me. As others have said, I just want to use the best available oil for my car.
HPR5, on Penrite's website says this:

HPR 5 is suitable for LPG and light duty diesel engines where API CF, ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4 is recommended but HPR Diesel 5 is our primary recommendation.

HPR5 is fully synthetic.

When I look at their primary recommended HPR Diesel 5 for light duty diesels, it says this:

HPR Diesel 5 is a premium quality, semi-synthetic, SAE 5W-40, diesel engine oil.

HPR Diesel 5 is designed for use in latest generation light duty diesel engines including the new generation of common rail and hydraulically actuated injector equipped units.

HPR Diesel 5 can be used where SAE 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30 or 10W-40 grade oils are specified.

HPR Diesel 5 can also be used when ACEA A1/B1, A5/B5 and Global DLD-2 are specified in the ownerÂ’s handbook.
May also be used in four-stroke motorcycle engines and in petrol and LPG engines as a mixed-fleet oil.

Note: Vehicles fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) may need to use Enviro Plus Oils or Diesel HD as appropriate.

Where does Penrite sit in the scheme of things.

Is Penrite a better quality oil than, say, Shell, or is Mobil a better quality product than Valvoline, etc etc?  :undecided:  :confused:

I have to wonder, why is half the price of Shell Helix Ultra?  :undecided:
Does that mean it is not as good?
I have always thought you get what you pay for, but that is nearly half the price of the Shell oil I have been using.
I notice it is only 5 litre containers too, not 6.

Hard to answer.

Pip seems to be the authority here, but there is certainly some conflicting information happening here for sure.  :Dunno:
