Title: Pet hates whilst driving
Post by: AlanHo on August 07, 2011, 21:46:32
My wife reckons that I am becoming a grumpy old man. Every time we go out in the car I seem to find something that irritates me.

My latest pet hate is the sign in the rear window of a car which announces "Baby On Board".......who the hell wants to know and why do they do it?
Today was especially nauseous - we saw a car with the sign "Little Princess On Board"....Grrrrrrrr   :wtf: :censored:

Little signs don't worry me so much, too busy looking at everything else.
But my biggest pet hate is motorists who fail to keep their vehicle in their own lane.
Whether it is oncoming, or other... just $hits me people are too lazy to steer a vehicle correctly around a corner.

Nah, you're all missing the point with these signs

If I drive up behind a "baby on board", I consciously think to myself "I'd best not crash into that car".

So, you see, those signs do have a positive effect  :faint:

Yeah, I think it means to say !! that the baby could cry any moment and the driver might jump on the brakes  :p so back off !

So, you have two standards of driving?  "Anyone and everyone - who cares?" and "Baby on board - better behave myself!"

Hmmmm.......... ;)

I must admit those "baby on board" signs bug me, too. Especially as many of the cars displaying them don't actually have one on board at the time you see it.
And as for the "Little princess on board". Well they'll get their comeuppence in about 12 - 15 years time. :P

The irony with these signs is often the cars with them on look unroadworthy (down here anyway) all battered and blowing smoke or with missing trim and patchy paint...
You don't usually see them on BMW X5 or anything like that

I really hate people who tailgate!!! The ones that really boil my pee are the folks that think  it's their god given right to be infront of you, even though you are keeping up with the traffic ahead they think it's ok to  undertake and attempt to push in.... God I'm getting mad just typing this.....

Oh yes, I get really peed off at people who do that.  And the ones who race up the left lane and then push into the queing traffic.

I think the 'Baby on Board' has been trumped by those @*%# 'My Family' stickers.  Who cares whether you have kids and pets!  Horrid little white outline people! Arghhhh!  I think I should get a Grumpy Old Woman sign for the back of my car.

No - it's UK Highway Code rule 138

Quote
138

On a three-lane dual carriageway, you may use the middle lane or the right-hand lane to overtake but must return to the middle and then the left-hand lane when it is safe.

Doesn't worry be too much over here if they are going quickly ..

If they stay in the right lane and going slowly and wont pull over when I want to pass.. that is a different matter

Staying in lane 3 when lanes 1 and 2 are free!!!!!!!!

Vehicles which stay in lane 2 when lane 1 is free is frustrating especially if you are in lane 1 wishing to overtake so you have to go in lane 2, lane 3, lane 2, lane 1.

I can NOT stand, and am always exposed to: Drivers attempting to leave a parking lot or side street with a stop sign, who roll up to the sign, look,  see you coming, then fail to stop so they do not have to wait for you, even though there is nobody behind you, and then I have to brake/downshift (the rev-matching is a little perk though).

Well here's my take, i always thought the baby on board was just in case of an accident ( they happen) and i mean a really bad one, with that sign rescue workers would know to search for a baby. but latter on i think young mum's thought there hubby's might start picking up young things in the family car, so put that sign up to warn off other girls that they could finish up with a baby on board also.

Tailgating predominantly and those who don't drive to the conditions. Tailgating is illegal here in SA, but unfortunately the law is not enforced, easier pickings for the cops with speed traps etc..... I suppose :(

I dont mind the baby on board stickers, it informs emergency services to look for a possible child in the wreck if the car is in a bad accident. a child might have been thrown from the vehicle.    as mentioned before,

My big pet hate is people who tp the brakes, or slam them on while looking in the mirror to stop somone who is tailgating, even though they are driving 20% below the posted limit.
in me arlier days as a courier driver in syd, i used to get this all the time,    not sure if people dont know the road rules, but anything that happens behind the B pillar of the car is NOT my responsability, i dont care about tailgaters, as i drive loking forward not behind..if they hiot me, their problem. and their insurance companies.  if someone tailgates me, so be it, be aware of it, and adjust my driving style to suit, as in brake a little earlier and be more on the lookout for dangers, just as you always should.   i will not do things to influence the driver behind me..

I have seen 2 accidents caused by people too busy looking in the rear view mirror tapping the brakes, and not seeing the parked car in the lane ahead,  one lady hit the parked car at 70 Kph! with no attempt to hit the brakes as she was watching me change lanes to go around the parked car.

oh, and MY Family stickers!   Always on SUV's that never leave the city.  almost like the stickers are their justification for driving a gas guzzling urban tank to do the shopping in and pick up the 2 kids they could easily fit in an i30...

Ultralights, the "Baby on Board" sign is no different to people who tatoo their blood type on their arm (like racing drivers). No responsible medical person will take any notice of it. With teh baby sign, emergency services people are driven by baby capsules and booster seats, not a sign which might be accurate once a month like in a grandparents car. Other indicators like nappy bags, kids' toys and so on are also fair triggers but at the end of the day, a thorough search has to be made anyway.

old people, WHY DRIVE SLOW!! arghhhhh

I can only speak for myself here, but I drove slowely because I am on a mission to avoid buying to much fuel.  I have no idea how much fuel costs in Oz but I can assure you that over here it costs a lot of money.  This is OK if you have money to burn and it sounds as though you do.  Most of us do not.

I try t o hold my speed to a boring 60 MPH, I stay in the inside lane, usually tailing a 42ton truck and watched the brain dead flying past burning twice the amount of fuel that they ought too.  When I know that the motorway is going to divide, which it does several times on my work journeys, I sit in the middle lane in the full knowledge that the inside lane is effectively another motorway, or will be in three or four minutes this results in certain people whizzing past in the outside lane, then, having to dangrerously FORCE there way into the nearside lane which is now filled with traffic whom, like myself, are familiar with these roads.................

No offence intended  :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

Has anyone mentioned drivers who cannot maintain a constant speed on any piece of road be it freeway speeds or even going from 40 to 60 all the time in say a 60 zone!  Annoyes the crap out of me,  usually the same people who will sit around 80 in a 100 zone then take off to 120 or more at overtaking lanes then back to 80ish again after it,

Ahhhh....drivers who cannot maintain speed. Yes, certainly a problem. But how about the ones who are slowly meandering the roadway, seemingly asleep, only to "awaken" once you pass them. Then they go tearing off ahead like they're in a race. I'm poor as can be, yet I always PAY attention  :P

I'd rather stay out of the left lane if possible so as to keep that lane clear for trucks and vehicles that are entering and exiting the highway/freeway.
By doing that, I'm also more likely to be able to hold a constant speed without having to ease of the accelerator or change lanes which, to me has to be safer.......  :goodjob:

In Oz, the "keep left unless overtaking" sign only applies to the far right lane, and then only if the speed limit is over 80kph, so, on a 3 lane highway it is perfectly legal to stay put in the middle lane...  :D

None of our motorways (as far as I know) have a right turn, so never a reason to hog the "overtaking lanes" - that's why it's a pet hate of mine... no reason whatsoever can justify commandeering a lane
Title: Re: Pet hates whilst driving
Post by: StarSeeker on August 11, 2011, 10:46:23
I think it's more dangerous to keep swapping lanes all the time.  I aim to drive at our speed limit of 70mph and normally manage this in the centre lane.  If I kept on coming back into the inside lane where vehicles are doing 50-60mph, I would be in and out like a fiddlers elbow.

Any driver that wants to break the speed limit which I’m doing, can always use the outside lane  :D

If a car is coming up behind you in lane 2, and is itself about to be overtaken, would you pull over into lane 1 if lane 1 were clear?

Interesting subject, this...

In UK the emergency lane will only be found on motorways and is called the "Hard Shoulder".

No vehicle is allowed to "run" in that lane, unless an emergency vehicle going to an incident and the other lanes prevent passage.

A vehicle is only allowed to stand in it if it breaksdown.  There is a maximum time you are allowed to be there, I think 45 minutes, and if you have not been removed by your own recovery service then the Police will arrange recovery, at your expense.

A vehicle is only allowed to stand in it if it breaksdown.  There is a maximum time you are allowed to be there, I think 45 minutes, and if you have not been removed by your own recovery service then the Police will arrange recovery, at your expense.

Same here. I was just joking  :winker:

I think it's more dangerous to keep swapping lanes all the time.  I aim to drive at our speed limit of 70mph and normally manage this in the centre lane.  If I kept on coming back into the inside lane where vehicles are doing 50-60mph, I would be in and out like a fiddlers elbow.

I agree on crowded motorways then this would appear to be acceptable, especially given that junctions may be short distances apart.  But if the motorway or even 2 lane road is clear then the Police may decide to pull a driver over due to not following the Highway Code.

Any driver that wants to break the speed limit which I’m doing, can always use the outside lane  :D

If a car is coming up behind you in lane 2, and is itself about to be overtaken, would you pull over into lane 1 if lane 1 were clear?

Interesting subject, this...

 Give this some thought, aint ya Shambles

If there was a pile of cars in front of me I would probably stay where I was, because the car behind me would still be stuck anyway.

If it was clear in front of me, I would just get out of its way by pulling over into lane 1.

So what is classed as lane hogging??

If all three lanes are busy and I am slowly overtaking a car doing 68 in the middle lane whilst I tootle past at the max speed limit of 70 in lane 3 and you are on my bahookie trying to speed past me, does that make me a lane hog?

It doesn't in my book, I am within the law and if you want past then you are not!

Accept your take on this.
My reply was presuming that the traffic is such as there are ample opportunities for lane discipline

If all three lanes are busy ...

If all 3 lanes are busy then it's not the scenario I painted. I would say a lane hogger was someone simply occupying an overtaking lane even though the lefthand lane(s) were clear with no little or no traffic ahead. Or, in other words, a lane hogger could be called a Star Seeker

Would be a case of failing to give way when changing lanes....the driver from lane 2 would be at fault.

Accepted, I guess the point though is that even if lane 1 is clear, a motorist in lane 2 sitting at 70mph is in my mind completely within his rights to be occupying lane 2 (despite it technically being an overtaking lane) on the assumption that sliproad traffic may cause excessive lane hopping.

Rule of thumb would seem to be the person who hit the other would be to blame.
So lane 1 runs into the back/side of lane 2 vehicle or lane 2 side glances lane 1 vehicle.

But in saying this both could be charged.

Lane 1 for not being observant when there is an expectation that lane 2 would move to lane 1.
and lane 2 for cutting lane 1 up.

The fitting of micro cameras into commercial trucks/vans in on the increase as this would remove the doubt when claims/counterclaims are made.

I disagree with this.

They should move into lane 1  and then if the see traffic merging onto the road they can move over into 2.

Don't forget, the traffic merging onto the road must giveway to traffic already on the road. They do not have a given right just to join without giving way to traffic already there.

The left hand lane is the one that you should be in most of the time. Although many people appear to hog the middle lane, it is the left hand one you should drive in most of the time.

So in summary, drive in the left hand lane apart from for overtaking, and once you've overtaken then move back into the left hand lane unless there are a stream of slower moving cars you need to pass in which case you should move back in to the left lane once you've passed them.

Lane hoggers facing fines

Motorists who hog lanes on motorways and dual carriageways in Devon and Cornwall could face a stiff fine in future.

Police are planning patrols to crack down on such drivers.

The police say when they questioned motorists, lane hogging was one of things that bothered most drivers.

Police will begin pursuing lane hogging motorists in earnest from the beginning of February.

Yep, and we see contraventions of that particular bible everytime we go out, cyclists on pavements, people parking on double yellow lines and close to junctions, motorcyclists riding three abreast and zipping in between cars (thereby undertaking), folk don't know how to use roundabouts (lane 1 - 2 - 1 to go straight ahead is a particular pet hate of mine), yellow hatched boxes seem to confuse everybody (how can it be difficult to understand that one vehicle is allowed to enter the box if the exit is clear??), vehicles which are supposed to be restricted to 56mph bombing past you as you sit at 65, overtaking on hatches, pulling in 20yd from the roadworks when you have been warned about them for the last 800yds etc etc etc.

Have you noticed that plod doesn't do a damn thing about any of them, which takes us all the way back to the lane hoggers get away with it and so continue to do so.

Probably why the country is in such a bloody mess, no consideration and nobody to enforce rules and discipline

Governments and Police have no one to blame but themselves because, instead of having police out on patrol, they've sat back and left it up to speed cameras.....trouble is, speed cameras catch no one other than those breaking the speed limit.
