Title: YOUR FINAL CAR
Post by: Doggie 1 on January 28, 2012, 08:20:57
With money as no object and regardless of how old you are now, if you had to choose one car and one car only to have until you die, what would you choose?
You can keep it as is, or modify it, change it, whatever, but you can't sell it or swap it for anything else. Ever. And you can't own anything else at the same time.
It's your only car from now on, for ever, to meet all your wants and needs now and into the future.  :)
So it has to be able to last the distance and it has to be as practical as possible for everyday use, commuting, everything.
What car would grace your garage as a genuine "keeper" bearing in mind it has to be your daily driver, your weekend cruiser, your car for all seasons, your retirement car and the car in which you would take your final drive (hearse excepted )
I've chosen mine  :D :D :D

A good thought. I'll have to think about this and come back to it.

With money as no object I would buy two cars and a mansion with two garages, one for a small car, such as Smart for everyday driving in a city, meanwhile the second one for a car with 4WD, such as VW Touareg or Nissan Pathfinder (if money is an object, but still suffice for two cars I would choose either KIA Sportage New or Hyundai ix35) for the countryside drivings

I agree. One car only. However, my wife will have a car and can change it as much as we she likes. ;)

At this point in time I'd be happy to go for the top of the range i30 Hatch but would have to drive a diesel first to see whether to buy that or petrol.
I'd stay with 17" wheels.
Instal a sun roof and re-trim the interior in leather.
Lower slightly and fit uprated struts and HD rear sway bar.
And it'd be a manual.
Really can't think of anything else I'd want.
Of course my thinking is always going to be coloured by what I have at present if I'm happy with it - and I am.

OK .. not that hard really .. after a thorough study of Carsales.com the winner is

Diesel Hyundai i40 active Manual with optional 18" Hyundai wheel upgrade .. Darkest possible window tint and maybe a few other options off their list (depending what else is on offer)

If it was our only car would want a roomy economical wagon type vehicle with most of the bells and whistles and a long warranty... :happydance:

Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe.

I wouldn't get a helicopter though.  If money is no object, why would I want to work??

Great choice and you are relatively easily pleased - especially when money is no object.
Great for carting all those grandkids around though, eh Dazz?  :)

Nice car, great choice - I hope you don't have too many kids to cart around though
(Although it would be quite pleasurable if you just had to make two trips  :whistler:)

None of the list when I narrowed it down under $100,000 came up better than the i40 (which didn't come up as it was not classed as a wagon)

You youngsters need to think a little more out of the box.

If the car is to be the only one you use until you die - and you expect to live well beyond retirement age - you have to allow for the physical changes that old age brings.

Your eyesight may not be as good as it was

You will probably suffer hearing loss

Your bones will not be as flexible

Arthritis may well be a factor

Hence you will need a car that :-
Has good all-round vision,
Is refined and has a quiet cabin,
Is easy to get in and out of
Has light controls.

This will rule out most saloon cars - including the i30 CRDi Premium with 17" wheels which is very noisy, has a notchy gear change, poor three quarter rear vision and is very low making it difficult for old fogies to get in and out of.

You need to look at a suitable SUV with large windows where the seats are bum height for easy access, it has good all round vision, light controls and is quiet.

Which cars satisfy those criteria other than a petrol Skoda Yeti ?  I need to know.

But then again, my young Swedish nurse would probably be able to help me in & out and up & down  :D

If your eyesight is bad, then a car that is close to the ground would be better (so you can see the road).

If you suffer hearing loss, then what does it matter if there is a lot of road noise (you won't hear it)!!

Therefore, a Porsche 911 would be ideal!!

Tough tits - the i40 is a lovely motor but is too low with compromised vision and is not very quiet. You need a tall car that is easy to access and with a panorama view. You also will need a quiet one for your deafness so that Trish doesn't need to shout all the time.

Toyata are bringing out a SUV on the Prius platform - that may suit you better.

I forgot to mention - any car must have a big enough boot for a wheelchair and/or Zimmer frame

When you suffer hearing loss - any background noise becomes very intrusive and you cannot hear conversations.

My choice is the latest Jaguar XJ.
It would be fully optioned with the "Rear Seat Comfort Pack," the "Illumination Pack," and the "Exterior Sports Pack."
I figure that this car would still be fantastic to drive in thirty or forty years' time.
A super drive now, it is also suitable to be chauffeur-driven if needs be (later).
It will please me in the interim years and will please me when I'm old.
And being a Jaguar, it will still be as significant when old as it is when young.
There are sports models I would prefer more now (the XKR-S for example with its super-charged V8) but then not that practical in the longer term.
I would choose the 3.0 litre twin turbo diesel as it has stunning performance, brilliant fuel economy and great green credentials.
Passengers young and old would love it.
It has copious amounts of room in the back for younger passengers now and for me when I'm senile.  :D
And I think that I would still love it when it was a "classic" car as much as when it was new.
And what a way to go to bingo  :D :D :D
Plus I'd need plenty of room in the back for my Swedish nurse  :P

Alan, I'm not doubting that at all.  I was just choosing a car that I would like right now.  A Porsche would mean I wouldn't be able to take the kids, and the girlfriend and wife would have to stay at home.  Just me driving, enjoying the dream.

Anyhoos, back to my i30 (still the best car I have ever owned or driven).

They're nice cars. aren't they?
EcoCar rave about them as you know.
The XJ is over $200,000 so a different car again and styled by Ian Callum (I like his work) and it would be my pick if I had unlimited funds  :disapp:
I love (among other things) the instruments which aren't really there. They just come to like when you start the car. They're "virtual" instruments that look like conventional analogue instruments but aren't, if that makes sense.
Jaguar have just released the smaller 2.2 litre diesel XF in Australia to try to attract a new breed of buyer. It's fully loaded and $84990 drive away.

I think I am heading for a mid-life crisis, the Veloster has really grabbed my attention, I can see me growing old (dis) gracefully quite happily in something along those lines.  Have been looking really closely at the various options in the last couple of days :whistler:

If I am completely honest it would be an Aston Martin, DB9 or Vantage, don't care, my sensible head tells me that it might need to visit the dealer a bit too often to be a true car for life though?

Low running cost.

High performance - 0 to 6 in 27 seconds

Can be tuned with the addition of white stripes

Out of all the suggestions, that is probably the most sensible.

Is it possible to fit a dvd screen so you watch suitable old age movies (with the help of your bi-focals of course)

What about pillion seat or a cross bar for someone to sit on  :)

If you must have a girl friend later in life - buy this one

We saw one of those recently which had 2 seats side by side.
Lovely old couple out for a "drive" in Caloundra (on the footpath).

That's really nice, but I think I still prefer the boy's bike "crossbar" version if I'm still up to it when I get there.  :happydance:

A couple of months ago we saw an old couple INSIDE a supermarket on a similar 2 seat scooter towing a little shopping trailer. The difference was that the rear seat was rearward facing and the old lady was putting her stuff in the trailer. They were causing mayhem in the aisles.

I would love to do that - sweet revenge on all the gormless biddies who stop to chat or block the aisles whilst they peruse the shelves leaving their shopping trolleys skewed all over the place.  Or the supermarket staff who block aisles with pallets and crates when re-stocking.

Whoops - I feel another rant coming on. I must have caught asathornyitis.

A group of people I know who are in business reckon they are going to build their own retirement village when they grow old.
All pool their money and build it the way they want it, with all the amenities they want and the "nursing assistance" they want too, rather than just accept what is available in the general market place.
I really like that idea.
I can imagine the global i30 retirement village with three hundred and seventy eight i30s parked in the parking bays.
Sorry for the off-topic - my mind's wandering again   :)
