Congratulations with your new camcorder.
If you have any questions about settings - ask.

I didn't have that small strap  :undecided:

Good one Steve..  :goodjob: I appear to have lost part of my charger for our BENQ M1 Video Camera while on our trip..  I might have to retrace my steps..  :sweating: (That is what my Mum always told me to do)

Misha - I don't need that strap so I shall send it to you. With your postal system, you should receive it sometime in 2014 ;)

I've packed it all away now until I get home, but I couldn't see an easy way of clipping it to the windscreen without hiding the viewing screen, unless I use the tripod screw connector with my existing windscreen mount, which I probably will anyway.

This thing seems to have a 12mp resolution at 60fps, not the 5mp/50fps I was expecting

I'll play some more when I get back.

No, thank you, I'd rather come and pick it up myself  :)

How is your DOD fastened to your windscreen Misha? Do you use one of the fasteners that came with the camera?

Yes I do.

Thanks Misha. I think I'll use the screw/tripod mount with my existing holder - it's all metallic and looks a bit better :)

Will be good when all done - I'm watching this one with interest.  :goodjob2:

Well I've had a play and driven to work today using it.

I'll post some clips when I get time but I'll need to edit them down. I've set it to create 10 minute clips and each clip is 500mb in size

But the quality is amazing

I have a question for anyone who has a similar device... there are two maximum resolution settings "1920x1080" and "1920x1080 S". Any idea what the "S" means? My drive in was set at "1920x1080 S" but I've changed it to "1980x1080" to see what the difference is later.

Also, what does your menu system look like?

This (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y297/ShamblesX/index_image034.jpg) or this (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y297/ShamblesX/index_image036.jpg)

I've read something about it in one of the Russian forum, but as I don't have it I didn't pay much attention, but I could try to find it

Thanks Misha (my menu's in English too now ;))

By the way, according to the DOD website (for the F900LHD (http://www.dod-tec.com/new_pop.php?id=37)), if you have this menu then you have a fake camera

The other menu is apparently the genuine one

Well I've run my DOD for a few days now. Nothing special worth sharing yet. The quality is awesome - I can now review the video and see the letters & numbers on reg plates as well as motorway signs. It's crystal clear, then again at 1920x1080 (30fps)  and $137 it ought to be :)

Doesn't appear to be charging as I'm driving along, as I've noticed the battery level is reducing, but that's a minor issue which is probably down to a setting somewhere.

And yes, it's genuine, as confirmed by dod-tec.com

Check if this is set to "YES" - Menu - settings of video camera - USB IN (here must be 'yes'), otherwise, if the latter is set to YES, my advice would be - to insert another SD card with different capacity (16Gb for example, class 10)
Title: Re: My new DOD F500LHD
Post by: Shambles on April 14, 2012, 11:21:08
Cheers misha but it seems to have sorted itself out (already had it set to USB IN=YES). It seems to [re]start charging when the indicator shows the battery is half full, then it starts building up again which is quite clever, tho quite daunting.

I'm using a 16gb CL10 card which is a good thing given the rate at which the video data is being written to it

All good stuff

My DOD runs all the time I'm driving, but to be honest I've got absolutely nothing worth viewing. No incidents. Nothing.

Maybe I should reinstall my old camera

Which reminds me, I must get some practice in using MovAvi (thanks misha) as the first (and only) time I tried it I ended up converting a 20 second edited clip (from the DOD) into a 1Tb avi file

I've been checking that one out, pip....Seems it's an updated model to the F500....
It supports 64gb SD Cards, uses no interval time file saving technology, takes 16mp photos and comes in a pretty gold colour....  :D

the last DOD F500's software provides no interval time too, so there is only one significant difference - colour

Very interesting. Mine has time intervals though the time it takes to switch files is less than 0.5 second, unlike the 10 seconds my previous camera took.

Must look for any later firmware for my doddie; I'm using v7.3 T2L-HH

So the firmware has bumped the SD card support up to 64gb for the F500?
And still pics up to 4608 x 3456(JPEG)?
What about the digital zoom...it's 8X on the F520...compared to 4X. :undecided:

I can't see a sense in using SD cards with hight capacity, such as 64Gb for example (unless someone wants to record a really long trip in one go with no notebook or other storage device at ones disposal).

Thanks. Not sure I understand any of it
I have just updated a firmware of my DOD successfully.
Here is a procedure for you:   Make sure you didn't mistake while writing down your firmware here as it has to be v7.3 T2L-KH

-download a file from here http://f500-faq.narod2.ru/firmware/F500L_update_files_v2_4.zip (http://f500-faq.narod2.ru/firmware/F500L_update_files_v2_4.zip)
-further on you will have to download a desired firmware
-then you will have to format your SD card by either camcorder or PC
- insert SD card into a cardreader and copy "autoexec.ash" file from "F500L_update_files_v2_4/update" folder (the one you have downloaded in step one) and a desired firmware
- you will have to rename a desired firmware file into firmware
- remove SD card and insert it into camcorder and turn it on
- wait for at least one minute (although 10 seconds are said to be enough)
- turn your DOD off
- insert SD card into a card-reader and make sure two previously mentioned files disappeared and flashlog.txt was recorded (it may be deleted)
- now you may insert SD card back into DOD and use it

No interval between files detected.

there is also the fastest way of firmware update (it didn't work in my case):
- download a desired firmware
- rename it into yamaha
- insert SD card into camcorder
- turn DOD on and do not turn it off until "firmware update" note disappears (10 seconds)
- turn DOD off, insert SD card into a card-reader and delete yamaha file

You sure I have to rename the file to "firmware"?

yes, to firmware (I hope you disregarded these "")

from V8.9_T2L-KH.bin to firmware.bin  or, how it appears in a folder from V8.9_T2L-KH to firmware

ok
by the way the resolution of this camcorder is the same - 1920x1080  (from ebay: F520 High Definition Video Camcorder is equipped with high-resolution (1920x1080 @ 30fps) video recording feature), whereas 4608 x 3456 resolution is for the photos only (4000x3000 for DOD F500LHD)
and both camcorders seem to be equiped with the same sensor - 5M CMOS Sensor

and here is an info from DOD-tech site for F520: Max support to 32GB SDHC Card  :P

Apologies for adding to an old post but I stumbled across this today. Is this a DOD F500 under a different name?

It looks very much like it - I have a DOD F520 and there seems to be little difference with mine.

You can get it cheaper though

PS: I wish I had found this 6 weeks ago - it would have saved me about £40 - mainly due to customs charges

That is one of clone of DOD. One can find cheaper items on DX, for example:

I accidentally dropped my DOD from a hight of 1.3 m today, it then hit an asphalt two or three times and came to a halt... I thought it wouldn't work in the end, frankly speaking, but it switched on and worked properly  :happydance:
Happy end.

What are these? And why? Or just for fun and to re-live the drive?

Yes, just for fun and sometimes to show others in different parts of the world what local conditions can be like. Also some members are trying to find what is a good quality camera, so there are examples of different cameras here too. Some members use the cameras for evidence gathering should they be unfortunate enough to have an accident.

More and more common for evidentiary purposes in Australia.
