Sounds like you'd be better off ditching Aldi and going to Shitloads Shiploads, John :D

Yeah Rusty I know. I was just trying to massage "shitloads" into "Aldi", to keep on topic.

Aldi has some good stuff. I had to laugh at my sister in law when they opened in Caloundra about 3 or so years ago.
"I give them 6 months", she said.

She shops there regularly and hates it when I see her there because I always remind her of what she said.  :happydance:

It's interesting. A really bad shopping experience with cheaper prices (such as these warehouse type places) or higher prices and great customer service.
One size doesn't fit all.

 Treve, stirer. yeh took me a while to use ALDI as did not have one close by. also thought they were just food stores. then friends started talking about TV's they got then saw TV's they got & were good for the price, then Computers @ dirt cheap prices. i also picked up a Vacume cleaner, looks like a Dyson style $99 see how it goes, also will test cloths dryer out before carting it down the coast.

They run a really tight ship (excuse the pun) so even though it is a warehouse setup it is still a nice shopping experience. They had to bring in crowd control in Launceston when they recently opened a store there. 5 in each time 5 went out

The guy who started this company started Chickenfeed years ago and then sold it .. The new owners had no idea and Chickenfeed closed most of their stores.

Shiploads (great play on words) have a great range and pallet loads of each item  :happydance:

The new Store + A big Hardware store + a big Harvey Norman + a Big Ray's Outdoor + Maccas, Subway, New 24 hour garage and more to come only 4kms from our house  :goodjob:

I only eat Macca's hotcakes and the occasional skinny Cap .. Not a fan of their burgers and stuff (they never look anything like the pictures)

I cant forget the image i saw once of a 10 y/o Maccas Cheeseburger (identical to a "fresh" one) except bigger  :whistler:

 Rusty, here's me moveing down the coast to get away from those places & Dazz is excited to have them. they destroy local personalised old fashioned shopping. but i'll shop at them before moving . no macc no KFC no Subway no Americanizing at all, just old fashioned Aussie service. 7 farms i can buy eggs & veges from also freash caught fish, lobsters ( heaps of Lobsters in Tassie too ) Oysters Prawns can buy from one place that gets them out the water. the rest are flown in, like in sydney nothing freash it all comes from Airport. Abalone there too but all goes to the Chinese they seem to not mind paying big money for it. but not sure why?

I'm not into Maccas, but I do find them good for brekky when on the road. At least you know what you're getting regardless of what State you're in.
I don't mind Subway....and can stomach KFC every now and then...

Cardboard from Maccas.
Generic tasting rolls from Subway.
Kentucky Fried Cardboard from KFC.
I do tend to use them when I have to, but try not to.

WE have the best of both worlds down here.. 3 Kms up our rural road on our two acre block.  Get free range eggs from family and neighbours and some organic vegies as well, Can get fresh fish and stuff if we want it.

But really handy to have a 24 hour garage just near the end of our road and the Hardware store + Shiploads have some grocery lines which will save going twice as far to Woolies (and cheaper too) :goodjob:

We're lucky, we haven't got many of the junk food restaurants, just Macca's, KFC & Subway....
Only got Woolies & IGA supermarkets but heard a whisper that Aldi has been granted a permit to set up shop which might give the others a bit of competition..  :)

Sorry, boys, no McChuck's, FCK or Subweigh for us. It's all VIP discount at the local butcher for high protein quality cuts of meat, home made yoghurt and raw nuts.
However, SA is getting Aldi and Costco next year and I welcome any competition to shake up the supermarket duopoly.  :D

we don't have them over here, but my first experience with Aldi's was in Hervey Bay when we went to visit the Daughter and the grandies,I wouldn't shop there,to disorganised for me,but good value for young families  trying to make their dollars go further,I could'ny believe they had groceries amongst electrical, was walking through the fruit and veg section then came along light truck winches and jack stands,it was a shambles(not the person)but very  cheap

Trev, went to ALDI @ North Rocks was raining, was not too crowded got the compressor plus 15M compressor Hose with the pressure fittings each end. one Guy bought three compressors & lot of air tools. another lady filled up a large trolly with hi vis cloths. was still a few compressors left.

LOL Rick, it came with a what looks like good quality blower, & Tyre pressure inflation with gauge looked like a better one to & a full size Spray gun the compressor comes with two quick fit & release air hose fittings so can have two different hoses hooked up.
i got the cloths dryer wednesday & was bit of a rush for them, but noticed the store still had two left. so did not need to rush in early, but you never know like some things go fast.
we have a good air compressor here that we have had for 18 years but too big for my new place i'm moving too, this one will be prefect ( i hope LOL )

Hope this one lasts, as does not need oil, but it's convient as it stands upright, so less space needed. i don't like relying on service station compressors or there pressure gauges. was forced to do that with work vans. what a pain.
Also on how cheap they are now, i remember my mate in outback mining town, just keeping one of those little ones you used to plug into cig lighter. he really gave that one a hard time LOL the thing used to bounce around vibratings while it tryeds to pump up flat tyres on anlything he owned or his kids pushy's tyres that were puntured but he always tried that first . & to think how much they cost then when $ was worth heaps more.

Love the place.

Even the wife's computer is from there (they had a couple left and dropped the advertised price by $100....Happy days). If you don't like it take it

I will shop there before I go to Woolworths. They have annoyed me by deleting lines, not having things in stock that they should (how can someone who calls themselves the fresh food people run out of onions or carrots?) and their service has fallen (no we won't reduce staff when we introduce 'self service' checkouts...Honest).

You have to look after the competition, if Aldi (or the local green grocer and butcher) fail,  who will stand up to the big 2 and keep prices low.

I agree with that 100% Beerman, have noticed Woolys flease us for sure! also waisted time today going in looking for blueberrys non at all i'll shop at ALDI for any food i need that they stock too. no BS like discount fuel ( what a joke that is & flybys as if they give out freebies.
they just try to close small local shops down till no comp then jack prices up.

I'm with you beerman.
I have a rowing machine (originally $199 - a few left over dropped to $99 about 6 months later. It's a great unit and still works well 3 years later. My son bought at the $199 price point and was less than happy  :disapp:  when his sister and I went halves in one at $99. :goodjob: :happydance:
I have a TV which everyone suggested would be too slow for sports - shows NRL and motor racing fine with no pixellation.
And a capsule coffee machine. Until Aldi introduce this 12 months ago last November (with a 2 year warranty), everyone wanted hundreds of $$ for them. Now most places have an entry level option at around $100. Aldi is still only $89.
Also got a bike stationary stand a few months ago - $49 IIRC. Every where else seems to be up to $150.
We buy a few groceries from them but selectively and gradually working up the range.
Waay back my son bought an infaltable mattress from them (double bed) for camping and it developed a slow leak which I couldn't find. As is his usual method, he never kept the receipt. I took it back to the local branch (he bought it in Brisbane) and explained the situation. No problem. "Sorry we don't have any at present but here's your money back."

don’t follow.

pixellation is due to signal not what is being shown.

It was probably me, I don't think I said it was too slow, but in a LCD TV when the camera pans, every pixel has to be remapped into a new position on the screen. There is a response lag associated with this and if the lag time is too high, then the picture can be blurry. Modern screens are getting faster, but you actually cant beat a CRT, however, the CRT doesn't have the screen resolution that LCD's can achieve.

I'm glad yours is OK Surferdude.

Something like that.
Several people quoted response time (may not be the correct term) numbers and suggested it wasn't necessarily up to scratch. In fact, since then I've been unable to fins any TVs with the numbers being quoted as "the latest".

Here's the original discussion.

In Oz & I think Europe, the screen is divided into 625 lines, phased alternately (PAL), which is a bit short of 1080p.

Hold the boat!
Let's not confuse screen resolution with TV standards.
A CRT ALWAYS has the potential to beat LCD because its projection is analogue, which is technically infinitely more hi-res than digital. However, the electronics that drive your image are going to work on a finite amount of bits to achieve your image.
An LCD is limited to the number of physical Liquid Crystal Display cells with which it is constructed.
A CRT is a continuous coating of phosfor on the inside of a vacuum tube and will smoothly display to whatever resolution the electronics will deflect the beams.
If you have a graphics card that exceeds the resolution of your LCD, then you have a case to keep that big old CRT monitor!

I was commenting on TV for Australia Gonz, not the theoretical possibilities of CRT. As there Isn't any analogue TV signal in Adelaide & I don't have a super duper graphics card, our dinosour TV went West, ages ago.

Of course, what you state is correct.

No we are talking about a TV trev got at ALDI :whistler: :)
we had to get a new water pump for the rain water tanks. ALDI had one on a special 7 got it, when the time came to use it it did not work, took it back & all there stock was back at warehouse, no way to get a replacement, so they just gave us the money back. had to buy one at Bunnings. still they back there products 100%.
CRT stand for? i hardly ever watch TV only sport or News. there is a what i think, is a good flat panel  TV thats big enough in the new Villa i just bought down the coast. what i'll need to find out from our tech Guru's is how do i get this TV to show things i have in my ipad? & via Wi Fi. i've seen a friend do this with movies & want to do the same?

CRT= Cathode Ray Tube, or an old type, heavy glass TV screen.

Hi John I did this the other day with my Android Tablet and our LG TV (both items need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi Router)

Not all TV's will connect to Wi-Fi. The TV either needs to be new enough to have Wi-fi built in or be compatible with a wifi dongle.

Then with Android you have to hit the Share option. I assume Apple is similar.

Apple people will know more.

If you let me know the Model and Brand of the TV next time you are down there I can check if it is likely to work.

Old School , i prefer the new stuff, much lighter easy to mount on wall . but i saw a funny thing last month. went to a party & the guy having the party (50th) always likes old stuff, he rebuilt the motor on an old EJ Holden Premier Auto ( old grey holden motor & two speed auto )he done that about 15 years ago, & his old Mum just loves it still would not drive anything else LOL and he has a lot of old Holdens all models & i thought this was dumped in the paddock , an old 59 ford F100 tray back but  NO that fly's it's got an old Y Block V8 he rebuilt, it just fly's LOL ( i could not imagine anyone else that would be impressed with an old Y Block V8 Fords performance. LOL then he proudly tells me to come in look at his telly, he had one of them old wood cabinet TV's like we had when Telivision first came to Australia back in 50's the screen was that small i told him i'd need reading glass's to watch it LOL but something was wrong it was showing colour not the old grainy black & white they came originaly. he proudly tells me he put a late flat pannel monitor inside. ( but still small) some people never change. but his Mum would be cheap to keep one car since 1963 ( she has owned it from new , still in beautiful condition too )

We had an EJ Premier too 138 CID, (posh), Actually the Hydramatic is a 3 speed transmission that short shifts if the load is light. The Powerglide fitted in the HD onwards, was a 2 speed only and a really bad idea IMO. We also had the EH Hydramatic in 179 CID red motor, a great car, I'd like one now.

We have an LG 55in 3D with 400Hz refresh rate, which is plenty for eliminating motion blur associated with older 100Hz TVs.  :D
Title: Re: Are you an ALDI bargain hunter?
Post by: Phil №❶ on April 23, 2013, 11:03:13
Gonz, If I may, the refresh rate I am referring to, is the time it takes for each LCD element to change state, which is a different parameter to the screen refresh rate. Is there a correlation between the two, I admit I only pick this stuff up from magazines, I'm not professionally trained and would defer to your explanation.

The 400 hz is a great thing when a camera pans, 50 Hz causes the whole screen to jitter and is very hard on the eyes. Panning right is worse than panning left for some reason. We have 2D 100 Hz which is better than nothing.

The two parameters are response time and refresh rate. Response time is the time it takes for a pixel to change state and back again. Refresh rate (or temporal resolution) states how often per second the screen is updated. While the two parameters are not the same, response time does need to be short enough to support the refresh rate, so there is a relationship.  :D

Hey Phil you know your EJ! i just asumed it used the two speed. hey not many quote in Cubic inch now. the old grey 133 had a weak crank, ok if they are left stock, but the modified to make more power one's would break the crank sharft, the next model EH got the red motor 141? 179 was a much better performing motor, but the Crank was still the problem, did not break like the old grey motor's but it was not fully counter balanced so if modified & stock crank left in them they would go through a series of unbalance vibrations at high rev's, latter Holden fitted a Fully counterbalanced crank painted motor blue. i had an old EJ that had a Repco Big Bore grey motor & twin Carborators it had been converted to a floor shift but still had the front bench seat so the girls could sit right up beside me. i'm told now that those old Repco motors are worth a lot of money. i had an EH 179 Ute three on the tree i got from the old race driver Bob Holden it was his from new and it flew i loved it.
had a HQ 308 4 speed one tonner too.
Back to ALDI if the weekly specials are what the girls will be after Get in Early! anything women go for sells fast. If it's more what men want you can get in later, LOL

was a race only Engine of the day, a lot still seem to think a carbie or Throtle body per cylinder would flow more air but not true. they will only flow what the carb or throtle body that is indervidualy mounted to each cylinder will flow. i much prefer a large manifold with single larger Carb or Throtle body. as no fuel stand off with overlap & you have a large amout of airspace in reserve for higher revs. with EFI & TB that works well. with a carb you need large enough excellerator pump to fill in airspace at lower revs if you hit throtle hard, to stop a flat spot. but still the old Waggot motor was interesting , they also made there own motor latter on it was a 4 cylinder & was used in open wheel race cars. Merv Waggot was a smart man, we also had Graham Waggot. but i think it was Merv that designed the motors. he was a Sydney based Cam manurfacturer too So was Graham. i had Graham Waggot copy the lobes from a 427 Chevy turbo jet V8 onto a Ford Cleverland 351 V8 that also had the small port 2V heads & it out performed a lot of GT's surprised a few of them. but fuel was very cheap then.

I used to love going to Sal Markets in Hobart, do you ever go?

Haven't been for a while. More for the tourists, so not many bargains any more. We forgot about it when in Hobart the other day. By the time we saw it, was too late (they were packing up) :-P

well might have changed since last i was there, But was unequal, hard to describ why i felt that way, but like Eumundi Markets but different i liked Both & i was fortunate enough to go to Paddys Market in it's Hey Day. Sydney has nothing to match that these day but they try, just all the same we have Markets all over Sydney are they all flog the same thing so very borring. Sal Markets & Eumundi Markets where different when i saw them last, could have changed.
Eumundi Markets are good, John. But the Yandina Markets are even better IMHO, if somewhat more "countryfide". I think Eumundi has become a victim of its own success and is a bit too commercial these days.
I've only been to the Salamanca Markets once but it was a great experience. Hope to get there again sometime in the next few months.

Also, I was a bit of a fan of the Parklea Markets when we lived in Sydney.

Hey Dave, :) everyone can look.
They have got the motor from that old FX on a stand at the museum, it's hard to beleave the amount of work the must have had to do making the mold of the head with twin over head cams & the six carbs, says they went from Amil MC carbs to SU's but the motor they have on the stand has six Amil carb's that have had SU float bowls adapted to them, probably to hold more fuel.

I got asked to navigate once for a guy who was developing a Fiat 128 with 4 Amil carbs. Despite (or perhaps because of) help from the Fiat dealer, the car never ran properly and it never got to an event. For three months I told them to stop messing around and fit a couple of Webers - to no avail - so I moved on.

Great Carb dave just have to know how to Tune them as they don't adjust to elivation, the CV carbs the Japs make are better as they do ajust to elivation, Kenin have made a CV 51mm for Harley Davidson it would be great in place of the larger SU but would not match the classic style.

Yes the Webbers would be a much better choice, i have a friend thats very good at tunning webbers, he has his own Engine Dyno & just builds & tunes what the customer asks. one guy in apendix J got him to develop & old red holden motor for an XU1 it makes over 300HP thats a lot from the 202

Pretty easy to tune them. Just change jets. No minute adjustments required. My old father in law was a wizard with them too. He was race mechanic for the late Glynn Scott and would tune by ear. Later you could go put the car on a dyno but never need to change anything.

Thats good, yes if you know its easy, but some people who don't know, can make them run bad. i saw a few 2L OHC ford Escorts having trouble & a well known tunner in Sydney could not fix. then my friends 18 year old son solved the problem. the fuel pump was pumping at too higher pressure & blowing the float needle & flooding, he got an ajustable fuel pressure fitting & got them runing great, Very smart boy. he once made a two stroke whipper snipper motor into a 4 stroke, made his own head fitted a belt drive pully to the crank, made a series of sharfts that went through the head he made put another belt dive pully to the sharft in head to link to crank sharft & machined two holes in the sharft in head one hole was intake had a carb on it, the other hole was exhast & had exhast pipe mounted to it. the boy did this all himself @ age 10years old for a school project, he won. latter went to england & worked for race car teams .

Don't think the cams on there own would make that much difference, a lot took the capacity from 265 cubic inch to 300 cubic inch( 5.000ccor five family size soft drinks ) that makes a good gain with the right headwork they were fast for there day. Doug Chivas was the guy who got them famiouse at Bathurst they went from a 3 speed on the floor to a four speed on the floor. Leo & Pete also went great in the sprint races in them. but they were Marickville Mercedies no real Aussie would drive one, they were for Ethnic's.

Remember Years ago when we had the car yard,we had a worked 265 R/T charger come through the yard, damned thing went like a cut cat, revved well over 6500 RPM, but by the mothers to be it was loud,by the time the revs got up there the exhaust note was ear peircing

OK, we went to the invitation only opening of Shiploads. Got there at 2.15PM (doors opened at 2.30pm) had to park 50 metres away near the bottom of the car park. Already over 100 in the que and by the time we got in several 100 behind us.

The 1500 square metre store was soon chockers and so were a lot of people's trolleys. It took us 30 minutes to get through the checkouts and there were 7 being operated efficiently by 2 staff each.

When we came out at around 3.45PM there was still probably 100 people queued up to go in...

I know one of the Managers quite well and he said they expect tomorrow to be quite a bit busier

The guy over the road, worked for Westons when they closed, but had not worked for them long. did not know Arnot's took over. whats up with Arnot's?

the old Weston's office block is now Duesex Machina Cafe & Bike shop but not your normal run of the mill Bikes, they make up bikes that look like old Brit Cafe Racers but use the Yamaha 400cc Single & 500cc Single think the motors dry sumped too like the old brits Triump Norton & So on interesting little shop too.
there is also an old Arnot's Bakery still with original stone ovens, up at Morpeth they bake Bread there.

John, I found out you could get an invite off their Facebook page (Facebook strikes again)  (very smart marketing - worked a treat)

Re: The wagon wheels, the Reject shop did have some similar at one stage but they were $30 each instead of $20  (and they are sold out too I think now) I want 10 so a $100 saving if Shiploads can get some more. I had a chat with their buyer at the opening, he is going to try and find more :happydance: (It is not what you know it is who you know)  :goodjob:

I dislike takeovers. As a child our family frequently had sausages for tea at night. Made in SA by George Chapmans, unlike the traditional sausage which is fatty and juicy with everything that's bad for you, these were thin pork and although pork probably walked through them on stilts, ie not much pork content, the flavour and texture was great.

Well Chapmans get bought out by a big Sydney firm and goodbye to the sausages, no longer sold in SA. Haven't had one for many, many years. I have searched hi & low for a substitute, but nothing comes close at all.

Not happy Jan.  :'(

Seems to be that once you're good enough to get a big enough name, the takeover comes and customers are left to find an alternative. I guess that's why I have such a healthy respect for Coopers (not that I drink beer anymore). With our focus on high quality protein, we've settled as VIP discount customers of Baa Moo Oink and their stuff is pretty good. Standom are worth checking out if you're a big sausage fan or even a fan of big sausages.

edit

Item 1201 in their catalogue looks like the same sausage concept, but what do they taste like. Hmmm

Did you attack their shelves Dazz

I only spent $24 something including a new leather handbag for Trish. Trish spent about $16 I think. We spotted a few other things we liked but when we saw the length of the checkout queue we decided to wait until things settle down in a few weeks.  :undecided:

Sure, for Trish.....I believe you  :disapp:

Goes with Dazz's skirt and leather undies.

I'm going to put a rail up the side of our new ramp and am going to paint those wheels cream and incorporate them in the bannister, if I can get them (and use two more in the railings of a bridge down near our dam)  :D

Sure, for Trish.....I believe you  :disapp:

Have you seen a picture of me? A handbag wouldn't work at all
Trish said "I saw one I liked I might get it next visit" I said "as if it will still be there next time, you better show me and I will pay for it for you"

Mind you, there was no way I was going to carry it in the shop or to the car  :fum:

Any of you South Aussie's remember the Golden Honey Icecream they used to sell at the old Golden Fleece servo just out of Gawler, used to be on the old bypass, since they closed down I have never found anything to match it,my mouths watering thinking about it.

As kids Dad would give us a treat every week or so and drive us out there, just to get us all a double cone,he used to get a discount cause he drove for Golden Fleece.

Maybe some born'n'bred can answer that. My earliest recollection of Mt Barker, Eagle on the Hill and Adelaide was driving in on my first posting and asking on my CB what people do for entertainment on weekends. I was told 'go to Melbourne' - heartbreaking considering I was coming from there. Then to top it off, the only place to get petrol was a coin-operated bowser on KW St. :blubber:

Now that was many many moons ago,yes and we used to go to Melbourne on many a whim, leave 4 pm Friday night,be there just before midnight, hit the wharfies bar, just up from the docks, would only be closed for 1 hour per day,so it was open for both shift changes, bonus was we had family over there as well we could crash at.

Coopers is the biggest 'Australian owned' brewery XXXX having sold out years ago, and CUB a couple of years ago. There are plenty of smaller brewerys out there doing excellent beer. i used aldi quite a lot when they first opened... i didn't enjoy the customer service tho...

then one day a somoan couple came in, pushed into the already understaffed checkout line up, then proceded to go bananas and threaten everyone. the woman tried to punch a customer who went back to get cheese while the checkout woman was scanning all of her products. yelled at me, yelled at my ex girlfriend at the time, told their kids to break stuff until they got service, the bloke tried to hit the checkout woman. IT WAS ON!

the part i consider the worst  was they didn't have anyone to throw them out because they dont even have store security.

i left my stuff there and haven't gone back since, and i wont until they can guarantee that wont happen again, I'm not shopping in an environment where i get threatened because they refuse to open another checkout even when its busy.

. the woman tried to punch a customer who went back to get cheese while the checkout woman was scanning all of her products.

What can I say about the Somoan's, almost as bad as the Chinese immigrants here, extremely rude and arrogant PPL IMO,there is no need for that sort of behaviour, but anyone who goes to a check out and holds PPL up so they can go back and get something they forgot, gets my back up as well,Sue will occassionally try to do this and ask me to go back and get stuff she has forgot,I refuse,I just say pay for what you have stop holding others up and go back and get it later.

But yes Checkout rage is becoming more common especially at the budget shops where the stores are far understaffed and yes I noticed that the few Aldi stores we did happen to visit,no security staff at all,but after seeing the stores I wouldn't go out of my way to shop there,Daughter loves em,very very cheap,so for her with a young family the possible inconvinience is off set by the savings for her.

Sorry to hear about that Ian, i never seem to have trouble with anyone at all, we don't see that type of behaviour at the ALDI i've been to But hey i'm deaf. now i'm starting to think just how fortunate i am.
I think i've had people try to intimidate me in the past but when there is no reaction they don't do anything. but i don't scare easy, meet a few bouncers in my time & the best don't have to touch anyone they just have the right approach.
GOB i used to think the same about some Chinese being rude, but  when you start to understand them they are not really that way, but you might have meet some  of the odd bad ones. i know a lot and get on very well they can be beautiful people, so are Samoans i know a few of them too, if they like you they love you. must have been wrong time of the month Ian. cheers mate

I was in Canberra playing pool/eight ball for money in the clubs......and so were the Samoans...they liked their pool if they are winning........I was taking them out left right and centre as well as others and I was purely courteous to them the whole night , except I kept taking them out......I made the final against the Samoans and they sort Of gathered around me and started their stand over tactics......as a rule and with my back ground and training, I don't back away from anyone(yes!...I know ...thick between the ears).........so I went up to security and manager of the Club...told him the situation and informed him that since I had informed him, anything happens to me , I will sue their arse off........so I beat this guy by seven balls , went to pick up my winnings and the boys followed me.......The mamager and security came between me and them and the manager gave me my money and told me for my own safety, I should not come back for awhile.....    and I thought these boys were good sportsman.....hmmmm

The security is provided by the Center not the stores. Occasionaly they might have an undercover person to try to nab the shoplifters. But you would be flat out to find any security that would do much more than what you can do yourself (call the police).

I actually think that it is a pleasure to have someone to scan my stuff. Usually at Woolies, when faced with the large checkout lines, I relent and use the self service checkouts.

That's pretty much it.
They can ask you to wait while the police are called and they ask you for your name and address but it's up to you if you supply it.
Most people once caught are co-operative but there are always some who aren't.
At the stage though that you're spoken to by security staff, it's all on cctv etc anyway so probably not much point in walking away.

Citizen's arrests are fraught with danger for the one doing the arresting.
As most people don't know the elements to individual charges (which have to be proven) they can end up leaving themselves wide open to civil suit, not to mention personal injury.
Time, place and circumstance I guess. If someone has committed a hold up then it's pretty obvious they have broken the law, but caution would still need to be exercised.
Over here the advice generally is don't do it, but if a police officer calls on you for assistance in arresting someone it is an offence to refuse.

Would depend on the state or country.

I would argue most would have something in law that allows a citizen to arrest someone when they are suspected of committing an offence, as an example from the Queensland Criminal Code...

 CRIMINAL CODE - SECT 546
546 Arrest without warrant generally

When an offence is such that the offender may be arrested without warrant generally—

    (b) it is lawful for any person who is called upon to assist a police officer in the arrest of a person suspected of having committed the offence, and who knows that the person calling upon the person to assist is a police officer, to assist the officer, unless the person knows that there is no reasonable ground for the suspicion; and

    (c) it is lawful for any person who finds another committing the offence to arrest the other person without warrant; and

    (d) if the offence has been actually committed—it is lawful for any person who believes on reasonable ground that another person has committed the offence to arrest that person without warrant, whether that other person has committed the offence or not; and

    (e) it is lawful for any person who finds another by night, under such circumstances as to afford reasonable grounds for believing that the other person is committing the offence, and who does in fact so believe, to arrest the other person without warrant.

They are the general powers of arrest and are very similar to W.A. laws (Qld & W.A. have almost identical criminal laws).
But it still doesn't provide protection from civil litigation should something go wrong.
